Well just got a Hitachi desk star 1tb for my birthday and was wondering how i should arrange partitions etc. I have currently a 640gb AAKS so what one would be better for the OS and how big should partitions be?. This system is mainly for gaming but would have a bit amount of storage (hence the 1tb)
Any help is appreciated.

No and dont really plan to as any data lost wouldnt be much importance in all honesty.

Alright, unless you plan to install Linux then your best option is to just to throw one complete partition onto the drive.
The performance increase by spliting data between partitions on Windows in minimal. On Linux you may notice it, particularly if you ensure that /var and /tmp are at the start of the drive.
The 1tb drive will be the faster most likely, so create a partition at the start of the disk big enough to contain the OS and any games you want to load quickly (300gb would be plenty), and create a partition on the rest for non-speed dependant storage. Use the second disk for the pagefile, additional storage, and anything you think you'd run at the same time as something from the first disk. Again I'd suggest a partition at the front of about 200gb, then a bigger one for the rest.
*yawn* What about if he installs a couple of games and runs out of space? Windows doesn't do dynamic resizing that well.
What games are you talking about that a couple will take up 270GB of space?
Yeh i believe 270gb is enough for games i regularly play (CSS/Dawn of war 2 etc). I still think the partition thing gives a huge bonus because my 250gb AAKS first partition (100gb) ran 15-20MB faster than the second.

yeah 300Gb is huge, i'd even say tone it down to 150Gb to maximise speed (i've never used over 80Gb for OS/programs/games yet) of course it depends on how much u think u will need. if you believe Zak: the smaller the faster for the first partition.
Making the first partition smaller doesn't increase speed, all you need is another partion somewhere else for you to dump data that you don't care about being as fast as possible so that the only data in the first one is faster stuff. The partition will still fill up from the front no matter the size, the size just determines how far back you put the rest of the stuff.
400GB is also fine for that reason - but if you don't think you'll ever get there with frequently used games then you might want to go smaller just to slightly speed up your non-speed critical stuff.
i didn't know the drive always fills data from the outermost edges, that's quite neat.
smaller = faster was summarising my understanding that small is always going to be faster than big because you will always be working closer to the rim.
Well im going for 300gb, rest will be storage and ill also use the 640gb for some games as thats not a bad drive.
Currently have on my 750Gb Samsung
60GB ( C:\ ) set aside for the O/S but i could get away with less best part of hdd set aside for apps and games ( D:\ ) and the last part used has a temp disk that i have my documents set on, temp folder, temp inet folder FF cache folder and so on
My 1TB has a 10gb part at the front for the swap file then the rest used for data.
Ok i finally formatted it but heres the dilemma, what one is faster?
Up to 400GB they're the same so don't worry about it
