Question Which wireless card should I get?

    Morning all!

I'm trying to choose a wireless card - from Scan if possible. I need one that will work from one end of my garden to the other (and through two walls) and that's about 50m I think. I also need speeds that will make CS Source and other online games work normally.

I also have a BT Home Hub and it's rubbish - I mean RUBBISH! It keeps losing connection randomly! Any advise on how to fix this? Can I add a router or amplifier or something? (I don't really have a clue!)

    Any help would be great.

    Cheers,

    $eamonk3y

To get through 50m and two walls (assuming they're proper ones) then I think you'd best go for 802.11n-draft standard kit - you'll need both a router and a wireless card that meet that specification.

It might be easier to get a modem-router combo and use that in place of your home hub, otherwise you should be able to connect the draft-n router to the home hub via an ethernet cable and use that to wirlessly transmit to your computer.

You could get something like this kit:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Netge...Networking-Kit

plug one into your existing modem/router, and the other into your computer. Or just look at the list of n modem/routers and cards they have at scan.

Well for gaming i wouldnt use wireless, even the more expensive kit wont give you the stable results your looking for. N is better than G and gives better coverage but its never going to be as stable as an ethernet cable.

If you only wanted it for indoor use you could use homeplugs, obviously that wont work in the garden

Unless you need the extra 5ms responsiveness, wireless is fine for gaming. I have a basic router and PCI wireless card and the connection is nothing other than 100% stable. My broadband connection is more flakey. Just avoid USB dongles.

Tell me more about homeplugs. What do they do? I'm not going to be in the garden but in a room at the end of the garden - kind of a fancy shed-type thing... (it has plugs)

Re: Which wireless card should I get?

Homeplugs are basically generic plugs with ethernet connectors on, you plug them into your wall and your powerlines are used to route data through them. One plug usually connectors to your router or modem via ethernet and the other plug will connect to your pc. You will need one homeplug for every device you want on the network.

    Just an idea

Re: Which wireless card should I get?

So will the connection speeds be lower with these or the same as ethernet? Because if they are the same then that would be perfect for me - I only have one device far away from the hub and there is mains leading to it... So would i be able to connect the homeplug into the BT Home HUB?

Scan have some on Today Only: http://www.scan.co.uk/product.aspx?ProductId=22552
Any good? They also have another one but I think it only has one end of the homeplug...

    Cheers,
