    Watercooling Advice

Hey guys, i have £150 max to spend on a watercooling setup for my q6600 in my antec 900. The main reason is because when i built my computer, i bought an aftermarket cooler. this broke on installation (one of the pushpins) so i had to use the stock cooler. Can anyone reccommend me a good setup? In scan, there is a big gap between £91 (inadequate) and £160 (too much), so i wasn unsure whether to push my budget a bit (cant really, 150 is the most i can push it, £120 desireable) or possibly save money at the expense of a setup that may not do all i want.

I am unaware of any other reliable websites save for ebuyer which is an absolute nightmare to shop on unless you know exactly what youre looking for, so id greatly appreciate it if someone could point me in the directioin of a good setup (i would really like to push my q6600 up to 4GHz) thats not way too expensive. Also, i have a seasonic s12 500w PSU, would it be able to cope with water colling, bearing in mind at a later date, i would like to upgrade to something like a gtx 275 (that kind of territory, not that exact card).

    Thanks

    Re: Watercooling Advice

If you're going to go for a watercooling setup you need to be spending £200 minimum...

Otherwise you're better off using a decent tower heatsink...

    CPU block: £50
    GPU block: £70
    NB block: £20
    FET block: £20
    Pump: £50
    Radiator: £50 x 2
    Res: £20

+ tubing, fluid, barbs and fans

for a CPU only loop you're still talking £180+ http://www.chilledpc.co.uk/shop/prod...roducts_id=475

    Re: Watercooling Advice

Why not just get a decent cooler with a back plate to eliminate the pushpin design. As TAK TAK says thats too small a budget to do it any justice.

But i cant hit 4GHz with the aforementioned air cooler though, right?

    Re: Watercooling Advice

It's unlikely your Q6600 will do 4GHz stable, even with water cooling, unless you have an exceptional CPU, but they are few and far between.

    Re: Watercooling Advice

As has been said by Mike, what do you want 4GHz for? (except the e-peen...)

If you want a speed boost then go i7, the architectural difference will give you alot more of a boost than managing to get your chip to 4GHz.

And as Clunky says, even getting your chip to 4GHz is unlikely, not all chips are made the same, some may belly flog at 3.2 others 4.2, no-one can say for certain without trying it, however, there is a reason that they are rated for a certain speed, in that nothing over that speed is guaranteed

My advice? Get a decent air cooler, (TRUE, or that Prolimatech one [which i believe Clunk had the exclusive on..], as the prolimatech performs better than the TRUE), you'll get a quieter system/more overclocking headroom without the extra price.

    Re: Watercooling Advice

I am aware that each chip is different and the main reason for wanting the high number of GHz is for better performance in application such as 3ds max where even a small difference can really add up when it comes to a long render, especially when using global illumination and ray tracing (that said, i rarely use the latter). For me, a core i7 is out of the question due to its high costs, along with the need to buy a supporting motherboard and some ddr3 ram.

I think i'll just stick with the stock cooler for the time being, maybe wait for a more affordable i5 if it comes in quad core form...

If every caluation per second counts, and it's a rendering app, why don't you spend the money getting a CUDA enabled GPU and a rending app or plugin that uses CUDA? GPUs can render videos much faster than CPUs because they require less overhead to do it.
