how much to spend on heatsink

ive got most of my new parts for my install.... a few things left to get.

    so far looks like
    asus striker extreme
    e6700
some kinda good everclockable ddr2 800 ram
HD4870 oc 1gb (1gb pointless at my res but it was only £5 more and im weak )

so this will be my first overclock, im lookin realy lookin 4ward to doing it 4 some reason.....

i was originaly going 2 pick myself up a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme (presuming it fits, messureing later) but not sure if the price is justified on my e6700 i picked up off ebay for £66...... so u guys recon it would be a waste? or worthwhile? another option im considering is selling the e6700 and picking up a newer deul/quad..... eeeeeek cnt decide

    any opinions?

btw airflow in my case is prity good now that i attacked my case wiv a knife, and cut myself an extra 80mm intake fan in the slots where the dvd drives go (name?). it cost me blood but it was worth it, massive temp drops

    thanks guys

Get an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro or something similar for under £25. TBH, unless you are into massive overclocking with a power hungry CPU or want a silent system many of these expensive coolers are nothing but E-peen and cheaper ones will do the job fine. Some of these coolers are verging on the ridiculous in terms of size, weight and cost.

    LOL

hmmmm. somthing to think about. i think i would like a pritty high end 1 tho, as everything (exept the cpu ) was chosen with some overclocking in mind........ but perhaps some of the more mammoth monstrositys are a bit OTT.......

having said that, the next happy owner of a solid gold, diamond encrusted heatsink, with a payment plan will probs convince me thats the 1 2 get........ im like that lmao

yeah your choosing a heat sink for CPU now? and your not over clocking it?

i would keep stock one, most of them are fine

Arctic Freezer 7 Pro is your best bet mate. I used one with my E6550 @ 3.33Ghz up from 2.33Ghz and it still idled at 33c. Im using it with a Q6600 and even on a 3.8Ghz (up from 2.4Ghz) overclock the temps are kept on the goodside of 70c when stressed.

Keep in mind that the Core 2 Duo's have a TDP of 65W (95/130W for quads) so the Freezer 7 Pro will easily keep you cool, and as mentioned some of these heatsink/fans are enormous and tbh i dont think i'd want the strain on my motherboard - Freezer pro is big enough already!

Re: how much to spend on heatsink

ok so Arctic Freezer 7 Pro seams to be the way forward. tbh i was hoping 2 get lucky and get into 3.6ghz (if the cpu is a good 1), would the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro be suited to this level of overclocking? im not THAT worried about the money as such, although im not exacly wanting to throw it away for no reason. this is my first oc so its going to be an fun project, im just worried that for the money ive put out so far, skimping on the heatsink seams like a waste. however i understand theres only a few degrees in the very high end heatsinks, so is it fair to say i would reach a very similar overclocking plateau with a artic freezer 7, than a £50 heatsink?

thanks for the help so far guys, it appreciated

Re: how much to spend on heatsink

I am surprised at the current price of TRUE (even with a fan included). I paid £30 for mine and thought it was quite expensive. The reason I went for it though, is that I wanted my system to be 'near silent' (primary criteria) with some room to overclock, and I was willing to pay a £15-20 premium to achieve that. If you are not too bothered about noise, then the Accelero is a much better buy (MHz overclock/&#163. It's hard to determine OC 'plateau' because it's fairly chip dependant. But consider why you are overclocking. If it is for bragging right, then those £50 may be able to push further. But if it is to get more value out of the chip, it just doesn't make sense to pay an additional £25 for even a 100mhz advantage (if the difference is even that wide).

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Akasa AK-965 just as good as the old acf7p but cheaper

although for a bit more the new Akasa AK-967 is highly rated

I agree too but the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro is meant to be a bit quieter according to some reviews.

Arctic F7 Pro can handle a Pentium 4 up to 4.4Ghz - alot hotter than what you'll get near. Also as people have stated overclocking isnt dependant on your heatsink/fan, but more so you motherboard/CPU/memory - you may even get different results from someone with the same settings and components as you.
