Re: Anti-Static wrist bands
How does a cordless anti-static band work?!
If the corded ones are instrusive then don't use them. Just make sure to discharge yourself to the chassis occasionally.
Re: Anti-Static wrist bands
Yeah, they work the same. The only difference is that the cordless ones store the static within them whereas the corded ones discharge it directly to earth.

No - not possible - band will be at the same potential at the body, and storage of static is want you are trying to avoid!
This sounded like snake oil to me.. so I did a little searching to see if there is any science behind it.
A corded static wrist band works by providing a high resistance path to earth to discharge the static generated and stored y the body during movement. The static is generated by the relative movement of two insulators rubbing electrons off the surface of the other. The high resistance path is for safety so that if you touch a live conductor, you do not become part of the cct and electrocute yourself.
So how would cordless ones work?
The only thing I found claimed to use the Corona discharge effect. Corona discharge is the phenomena where a sharp point (such as needle)connected to a high voltage source generates a sufficiently high fieild strength that is breaks down the dielectric strength of the air by locally ionising it. In the dark you can see a blue discharge and is accompanied by the smell of ozone. I'm not convinced that that would work for the sort of potentials that would be generated in normal use. However a lot of tinsel like threads might provide sufficient contact area with the air to provide a discharge path. Otherwise the static would discharge by brushing against earth structures - but the risk there would be if it brushed against someting susceptible to damage by static discharge.
The other way it could work would be by providing a radioactive material to generate ionising radiation to ionize the air locally to provide a discharge path. Unlikely because of the obvious risks.
I also looked at the 3M website - one of the big mfrs of antistatic products - no mention of cordless wrist bands there.
They might work - but I am not convinced, but tbh the risk in computer building is minimal. Earthing yourself regularly, but particularly when handling SSD (static sensitive devices) when they are out of the packaging and not actually in the cct will be sufficient. Once they are in cct, the surround normal cct components will prevent static build up (unless you are really trying!). If you want to be really sure, work in bare feet or connect a wrist band to your ankle and earth it from there.
Re: Anti-Static wrist bands
does anyone actually other with them?
i been building PC for a long time and i have never damaged anything with static

+1
Just make sure you regularly touch the case chasis to discharge yourself.
Re: Anti-Static wrist bands
my thought is if your screwing something (eg a video card) in then your touching the case anyway somewhere, if not your bound to when slotting it in

Yeah, the point is you might have damaged the card just getting it out of its bag, before you even slot it in. But it doesn't take much to remember to self-discharge before you open the static bag.

Is this the same TAK-Tak that posts to new members in the Welcome thread - or his evil twin brother? The :shaun: of the family! :)

Yeah the wireless one's are useless. If you're going to bother with one at all get a proper wired one. Personally, I don't use one at all - just remember to ground yourself often - I leave the PSU plugged in but turned off at the socket so it's not live but still grounded.

Oh. I've only just realised that that was meant to be a black sheep. I thought it was a balaclava.:embarrassed:
