Hard Disk Enclosure Advice
Need some advice please regarding a hard disk enclosure
I've got a Samsung 500GB SATA HD and was going to buy a cheapie enclosure from ebay (around £12) to use the hard disk as an external backup device.
USB 2.0 SATA EXTERNAL HARD DISK DRIVE
Will the drive be ok in the enclosure (there's no fan on the enclosure)?
Anyone used one of these cheapie enclosures before?

I haven't use any of those "cheapie" enclosures before, but it will be fine. 3.5" drives don't need active cooling. I would recommend you spend a little extra and get one of these through.
Re: Hard Disk Enclosure Advice
As far as I have seen with enclosures, they do not contain 'special' disks with higher heat resistance etc. A maxtor enclosure for example will contain the same disk as you would buy for a system upgrade.
Just looked at the Ebay enclosures and TBH I shouldn't think it would represent a problem. They look reasonable well built for that sort of money.

Or one of these

(Includes the Akasa - which are very good, but - but less expensive than the source referenced above!) :)
Re: Hard Disk Enclosure Advice
Slight change of plan, might get myself a Icy Box SATA External Black Aluminium and sell the one I currently use Sumvision External Hard Drive Caddy
Re: Hard Disk Enclosure Advice
Currently use the Akasa (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AKASA...ports-upto-1TB!!) at work.
The version I have support IDE and SATA via an internal cable change if you plan to swap drives around or are attempting to retrieve data from all types of drive.
Certainly the best of its type I've used.

Re: Hard Disk Enclosure Advice
the two things i now look at when i buy an enclosure is a fan and a long lead from the power unit to the enclosure.
I feel a fan is better as heat is not good for drives. Normaly I would not leave an external on for long but sometimes there on for a few hours.
A short lead is just a pain when you have the enclosure on a desk.

The problem with the small fans is they can get noisy. The Icy Dock I've linked to above has perforated front so heat can escape :)
This one looks cool - 3.5" SATA HDD Case with 8cm Cooling Fan
Re: Hard Disk Enclosure Advice
..... the other problem with fan-assisted cooling is that when the fan fails your drive will cook that much faster.
TBH it depends on what you plan to do with it. Occasional access should not be an issue for a passive enclosure. However heavy, prolonged use of a fast high-heat drive like the early raptors is asking for trouble.
Re: Hard Disk Enclosure Advice
I have the one from scan and its great!
Re: Hard Disk Enclosure Advice
The Akasa housings get warm to the touch - evidence that they are passively cooling the drive. I have used some fan cooled enclosures, they do tend to be noisier, and often there is little provision for an air inlet, so although the fan is spinning, there is little air throughput anyway.

Just add the two exclamation marks on at the end and that should get you to the right place :)
I've got the same enclosure (but in silver), and it works very nicely - had a few initial problems getting eSata to work but I think that was more to do with the contoller card I was using.
