Lightbulb Spec me some DDR2 please!

    Hey,

I got an E8600 and X38 setup before Xmas, but made the horrible mistake of getting that nasty Kingston PC8500 (CAS7 *vom*), which crawls along at PC6400 6-6-6-18!

Anyway, I want to ditch it and get some nice LL DDR2 - I'll be aiming for 4.2GHz, so a 4GB kit that can do 420MHz at CAS4 with a reasonable voltage would be peachy...

    What would you guys recommend?

    Cheers,

    Su

AFAIK latency does not make much difference with the Core2 so IMHO I would stick with what you have.

I can't get it past 400MHz, regardless of the latency or voltage used mate, that's my main issue with it...

I agree, if it cannot reach spec RMA it.
But also check your motherboard specs & BIOS, you may need to update your BIOS if you haven't and there may be issues with that memory.

for pc6400 but remember there's never any garranty it will overclock on any cpu or memory

I would go with CAT-THE-FIFTH's recommendation of

    http://go.hexus.net/?id=372X587&url=...P-DHX-plus-Fan

I have used these before and they worked without any problems.

Re: Spec me some DDR2 please!

    Hey,

Thanks for the recommendations guys - I've submitted a support request to Kingston (I thought that would be a better starting point than OcUK... ), although I'm fairly sure this is a compatibility issue with my board. Unfortunately I don't have another rig capable of pushing this RAM to it's rated speed.

As for a replacement set, I did quite a bit of reading last night, and the current hot favourite seems to be the OCZ Blade Low Voltage kits... some of them are pulling CAS4 all the way up to 500MHz with less than 1.9V, which is pretty insane! The Corsair kit you guys recommended looks good, but it's pretty pricey and I doubt it would be able to push similar numbers?

    Cheers,

    Su

The Corsair kits are usable at 2.1v @ 533Mhz 5-5-5-18 so that would be faster than the OCZ ones and still within warranty 0.o Just drop these down to your desired speed and then apply what latency settings you want if you dont plan on running them at theres XMP settings. Also ive managed to get these kits running @ 575/1150 - on my config atleast anyway.

    Here.

    How is 2.1v @ 533Mhz 5-5-5-18 faster than 575MHz (5-5-5-18) with only 1.8V?!

Re: Spec me some DDR2 please!

Just a quick update to this thread - went for the PC9200 LV Blades. Just running them below spec at the moment (400MHz 4,4,4,12 1.8V), as my CPU is still not overclocked (yet)! Will hopefully start OC'ing sometime later this week.

And for reference it seems the HyperX 8500's (KHX8500AD2K2 only) have a bad reputation for not running at their rated speeds - one should hope due to compatiblity rather than poor binning. Kingston refuse to acknowledge any problems, and their tech support seem very unhelpful Details here and here.

    Cheers,

    Su
