1000W Be Quiet Dark Power Pro PSU

I just received my XFX HD 4890 Black Edition and it's sitting next to me unusable. I bought an adapter which said PCI-E 2 x molex to 8 Pin PCI-E connector which I received this morning and it's not a PCI-E it's the 8 pin motherboard adapter, so, as I had been advised that my 580W Hiper Type R might not be enough for my system anyway, and I see in another post someone recommended the Dark Power I thought I'd get one.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1000W...movable-cables

As I intend to upgrade board, CPU and memory later and would like to go with 2 HD 4890's I take it this will be enough for anything I might want to buy in the future, whats the chance of this not being enough in a years time.

Re: 1000W Be Quiet Dark Power Pro PSU

My first thought was that it is massive overkill, until I saw the specs for the graphics card that says it has a load of 500W. That still seems high to me, but I'm not an erxpert on high end graphics cards (if I need to spend more than £50 on one - its a lot!) so if that power requirement is correct, and you are planning on running two of them, then yes, a !KW psu will be required - in fact that may not be enough becoause you will have the peripherals and the CPU taking oower as well.

However, others with more experience may say that the power consumption in real life is over pessimistic.

Bear in mind that if you are runnimng a high power PSU at much less than it's rated power, it will tend to be less efficient. Not a problem in itself, except for the effect on your electricity bill. (For example - if it is providing 500 watts, but only running at 50% edfficiency, it will still be consuming nearly a kilowatt of power, the remainder being lost as heat within the unit. - That is only a SWAG - I haven't looked at the power/efficiency curves for that unit)

Re: 1000W Be Quiet Dark Power Pro PSU

    http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=18359&page=9

the hexus review states a power draw of 256w for a 3.2Ghz i7 system with 6Gb of Dominator memory installed with the 4890. you'd be looking at 400w max with two 4890s. the power draw guidelines for gpus are usually vastly over-estimated to compensate for the poor quality psus that cannot continuously deliver their stated power rating. if you have a psu made with quality components then a 580w psu is more than enough for any kind of dual gpu setup. 1kW is way overkill for your needs.

i'm not familiar with Hiper psus but i personally have a 550w Dark Power and I can vouch that it is a quality psu through and through. the build quality is exquisite and it is absolutely silent and runs cool even after gaming. it is hands down the best looking and most cool running psu i have ever owned, that's considering my previous enermax and corsair. it is a psu that u could trust with your life so if you do intend to upgrade then the Dark Power series is a good one to go for. 650w?

Re: 1000W Be Quiet Dark Power Pro PSU

1000w is major over kill... you could easily run 4xyour system on one...(if power was distributed evenly throughout the rails)

On full load i wouldn't expect your rig to pull more than 300W as is, and if you added another 4890, no more than 400w.

the key is a quality PSU such as the Enermax range or Corsair, but a Corsair HX620w would be MORE than enough to cover you for extreme expansion later on...

The reason quoted power values from the manufacturers are so high, is they have to deal with all of the bumf PSUs as well... such as EZcool units etc...

put simply, i would happily run that system on my HX620 (the reason i recommend it is because i have one... The enermax units may be better, but i have no experience of them so i couldn't recommend it.. however, Blitzen would reccomend Enermax over Corsair and he has used both, so i would be tempted to swing for Enermax )

Re: 1000W Be Quiet Dark Power Pro PSU

I'm fairly sure there was a website that actually tried to find out just how much a 1kw PSU could run, i'll try and dig it out...

    It was something ridiculous though...

edit: i can't find head or tail of it
mebbe HEXUS should do one... then i would know where it was

There are a number - just Google Computer Power Supply Calculator, although iirc, they all tend to over-estimate.

Corsair TX750 or TX850, both come with 4X6+2 PCI-e connectors for running dual 4890s.

Nah it wasn't that kind, it was literally someone just plugging hardware in via cable splitters and putting it under load, i think it got up to 4 quaddies on 4 mobos, with a few high end GFX cards (for the time) on each mobo. Or something like that, no doubt it will turn up eventually

You can see the thread about one of the most power calculators here: http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardwa...alculator.html

In short - they are really not that useful.

Ah well, I'll just start looking for a USB Kettle as well then never mind, I figured I'd look at some reviews and this one seemed to be excellent so I figured the more the better, at least in 2 or 3 years time I ain't gotta upgrade the PSU again, thats if they don't change the bloody connections again

If you're happy with it, then you go for it... it's you're money not ours...

It is a decent PSU.. it's just it is overkill for 99% of circumstances

I run my 4890 and rig on a 580 watt tagan psu with no problems what so ever. Cant go x-fire because I dont have the quad 6 pin pcie. Your hiper should be fine running it.

    What you need.
