Ok; help needed - possible dead CPU

My old laptop (Eurocom Phantom D90x) packed up taking my RAID0 (IHC8R based) array with it...

Anyway; realising that the IHC*R range support moving RAID arrays I've build an Intel rig around a Gigabyte D3SLR - moving the Q6600 processor from the laptop into this rig and mating it with a new heatsink/fan etc..

Currently its only got 1GB of DDR2 ram fitted and a spare IDE HDD - its only ever going to be a 'spare' rig.

Anyway; trying to power it up fails - I get no BIOS beep codes, the cpu phase loading leds light, all the fans which should spin spin happily but no display, no nothing bar the power light.

Could a fried CPU cause this or have I mis-connected something (I can't see anything in wrong)?

(Graphics card works - I've checked it on my main rig)

I take it that your main rig has an AMD processor? If not, couldn't you test the CPU from that machine in this one? Have you checked the PSU?

Yup my main rig is an AMD 940X II - very nice rig but sod all use in this instance

Reason why I suspect the processor is its the same behaviour as the lappy - and the only common component is the processor.

Though the PSU could well be underpowered - it was a spare I had hanging around so might try later using the PSU from my main rig...

Is it a normal Q6600, or some funny mobile variant?

It's not uncommon that desktop based motherboards do not support laptop based chips. Certainly check the supported list for your mobo

Bog standard Q6600 CPU (least from the info on the top of the cpu before I recovered it in thermal gunk).

Anyway; just tested the setup with the PSU from this rig (850W OCX) and still same result.

Think for the sake of not dismantling everything on my main PC I'm tempted to spend 34 on a cheep celeron just to get the pc up and running... or to prove its not the CPU.

If you're looking to buy a new CPU around that price, CEX sell the e6300 for around 30 quid and they often are sold on here at around that price.

Second hand obviously, but much better than a cellery

The other option is to ask someone to test it for you in their system. I don't mind doing this for you, but you'd have to pay for postage both ways (or if you would be willing to donate a few quid to charity, I'd pay postage back to you)

I'll test it myself - its not really too vital to me what spec the cpu is as once I recover the raid array it will be used a linux (mostly for traffic control via tc and iptables) test box... so cpu grunt power isn't going to be an issue (and I'm getting very puzzled by this...)

Apologies for the dummy question: you remembered to connect the the 4pin CPU power cable, right?

Yup; both the 'big' ATX and the 4 pin ATX Tried with a known working PSU as well as the PSU in the machine (the working one is on the PC I am using now so its either working or doing a good impression of working )

Nah; my intel rig is still dead - but as its just a recovery / spare rig no big loss.
