Ok; now confused..

Hi, my replacement CPU has arrived today so assembled the spare rig ready to go... and now getting continual short beeps which indicate power problems according to Gigabyte's site...

Rig is as follows:-
Core2Duo E6300
2GB DDR2 Ram (850MHz)
Nvidia 7200GT 128MB graphics (my gaming rig has a nice powerful 4870 but as this is purely a spare rig/file server build a 7200 is fine).
500GB SATA Hitachi 7200rpm HDD
LG (IDE) Supermulti DVD RW
570w PSU

I've checked:-
IDE connector, SATA connectors, motherboard atx power connector, fan power connector, ATX 12v CPU connector.

The only thing I think I mave wrong is the chasis plugs as the fly leads from the case lack any polarity markings ... but same result with all chasis leads bar power switch unplugged and same result with the power switch connected in either orientation.

System details:
ASUS M4A79, AMD Phenom II X4 940BE, Saphire ATI 4870 1GB, 4GB 1067MHz DDR2.

Looks at first pass as though it is in fact a dodgy ram module... Module in beeps, module out no beeps.

Re: Ok; now confused..

PSU is a cheep trust psu I picked up from Maplins to replace a 400w PSU I'd got. But the PSU is fine - using that PSU (and the crappy gfx card) in my main rig it works fine.

ASUS M4A79, AMD Phenom II X4 940BE, Saphire ATI 4870 1GB, 4GB 1067MHz DDR2.

Re: Ok; now confused..

Does the PC boot with just 1 stick of RAM? Or if there is only one stick, try one from another PC. If it boots, RMA the RAM. I know you said the PSU is OK but I'm going to tell you what I tell everyone else with a budget PSU - scrap it and get a proper branded one. You could probably go cheaper but this is a good unit: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166784

If you are buying from Scan any of the following units will also do the job:

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/400w-...ed-cooling-fan

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/350W-...ltra-Quiet-Fan

Silverpower is part of the same company as Tagan BTW and their PSUs have got decent reviews too.

Re: Ok; now confused..

For want I need replacing the power supply is pointless exercise at the moment.

The DDR stick is the issue - tested the suspect stick in my main rig and guess what - that fails as well

Going to RMA the RAM once I get back from work tonight.

Re: Ok; now confused..

Given that this is a file server I assume it'll be on 24/7? In which case, please for the love of <insert deity here> get a better PSU. A cheap 570W PSU will a) be *very* inefficient with the lower power requirements of that rig, and b) have questionable reliability. Plus, if a cheap PSU goes bang it can take the rest of your rig with it - bad news for a file server, dontcha think? A 350W branded PSU like the BeQuiet already mentioned, an Antec Basiq 350, or one of CATs picks from Scan will be much more reliable and more efficient (this is because a PSU is generally more efficient the closer to full load you run it).

Re: Ok; now confused..

Think of it this way - how much do you value your system at? Would you be prepared to replace the whole lot for hundreds if (when) the PSU decides to blow, or would you rather spend ~£30 now and save yourself the bother? Also remember the data on it - I hope you have backups or are willing to spend LOTS for a recovery company to recover data from a fried drive...
