Delay navigating in Windows Explorer
This is kind of weird.
Basically recently when I try to navigate into folders and sub folders, rename files or folders etc., more and more time is needed to perform said functions.
It's quite odd and has recently only occured.
A quick google suggests that it's a networking problem (Windows is waiting for something to clear(?)), but nothing's changed on our network recently.
I have recently changed hard drives that house my media files and am finding the same problems with the new ones. So I'm pretty certain but not entirely unsure it's a hardware problem.
Can anybody help please?

I had a similar problem when overclocking. A number of things (mostly disk access) would begin to run slower and slower over time. Relaxing the FSB and ratio solved the issue. I think the northbridge was being overtaxed. I'm still relatively new to this overclocking malarky tho.
Re: Delay navigating in Windows Explorer
My system isn't overclocked.
A quick google has suggested it's something to do with networking, but apart from the internet our machines aren't liked to each other in any way. I have also tried doing this with the network connection off and still nothing.
Odd question - is it possible that this occurs if the contents of one folder become too large. I'm in the process of flac'ising my cd collection.

Obviously if you have lots of files and especially so if their large like FLAC-ised albums it will take longer for them to display, also what is your system spec?
Re: Delay navigating in Windows Explorer
AMD Athlon dual core at 3.02GHz
4GB PC6400 DDR2 ram
Asus M2N-E motherboard
1.5TB Samsung Eco Green, and before hand a 1TB WD Black
2x36GB Raptors in Raid 0 for Windows Vista 64.
Edit - I'm not sure if it is folders with too many files / too much within them. I have just tried renaming something on a relatively small folder and have had the same problems.
Re: Delay navigating in Windows Explorer
Hmmzz, you could try turning off windows search indexing to see if that speeds things up. http://www.tweakhound.com/vista/tweakguide/page_4.htm second one down on the page, quickest way is just to disable the windows search service.

Wouldn't say its a hardware issue then :angst:
Maybe try a disk defrag and some other house keeping, the only delays i usually encounter in explorer are like ive said when my files/folders are loading but it still has the green loading bar in the address bar so i know its not a delay per-se.
Re: Delay navigating in Windows Explorer
is that the 5400rpm or the 7200rpm you never know.. it could just be slow access times because of a slow spinning hd, that coupled with a large folder...

That would certainly make a difference!
I'd run Ccleaner to clear out your temp files and run a decent defrag program as well, regularly.
Good Luck.
Re: Delay navigating in Windows Explorer
I would hazard a guess it would be some sort of add-in/plug-in that is causing a delay. What have you installed recently?
Re: Delay navigating in Windows Explorer
I've seen this happen with a few old PCs, put it down to a lack of reinstalling the OS recently :)
Sometimes I hate Windows.

Woah! :D :

JK Defrag runs fortnightly and always has done so. :(

It's also happening on my RAID 0 setup involving different hard drives.

I'm running JK Defrag fortnightly and run Ccleaner more often.

Apart from the new hard drives nothing of note. The only other thing was a new graphics card - but that was late May when these problems weren't around.

Hmm, it has been a while, I'm tempted to do this you know. Just start with a clean slate and all that.
Many thanks all of you for your help. Keep 'em coming!
Re: Delay navigating in Windows Explorer
Bump. This still is happening. :/ Apart from a Windows install (haven't got time right now) are there any other suggestions at all?

It would seem new installation is the only thing left, computer problems eh...
This has happend on one of my hard drives recently. I installed the RTM and at first it was fine, then the next day massive delays when clicking the start button etc, now my pc is no slouch (see specs) so all i can assume is it was the hard disk - checked cables etc still the same. Try lending a hard drive of someone and install Windows and still see if its slow. Also if one drive is failing in your RAID set up it will effect both.
Re: Delay navigating in Windows Explorer
It's weird, I've just rebooting - and navigation is fine. :/
It starts to kick in around ten minutes later.
