I found it more noisey than a 'stock' intel desktop CPU cooler.

If you value silence, look at the HFX Micro M2 case, its just one big heatsink.

yeh i bought mine before the euro moved so much, and they where still quite pricy then.

Its just for my media PC silence is golden, no moving parts is part of that.

If a desktop PC is going to be noisey then i should rethink things!

No, one of the benefits of an atom + ION is the lower power, so low heat production.

the problem comes if you try to use a laptop CPU or desktop CPU that is high power in a small place.

So the Atom+ION should be quiet? Be good to see some user reviews but can't find any!

yes absolutely, the advantage of the lower power consuming chip set doing all the hard work in rendering that HD video which CPUs hate.

when it comes to home builds they can always be made quiter than off the shelf builds like the mini, the downside is you can suddenly spend a lot more money making them so!

The Asrock is supposed to be very quiet in operation. But as you say, user reviews are thin on the ground.

    There's a review here.

Sometimes I use Newegg to get user opinions.

    Re: Micro ITX case advice

Personally I would get the Sugo SG05,an E5300 and the Zotac 9300 based mini-ITX motherboard. I would get a decent aftermarket cooler with a quiet fan and get a low noise 120mm fan for the case. Not only will this system have relatively low power consumption but it will also much easier to upgrade in the future.

Alternatively the OP should consider a notebook too. Use NHC to control CPU speed and voltage to keep noise and heat output down.

    Re: Micro ITX case advice

Don't like notebooks. I quite like my 20" TFT and want to keep that.

Good review on the ION. Thanks for the link. Quite tempted by it. I could buy an SSD at the same time and 4gig ram which should make it a very good system! Do you agree guys?

You can always plug your monitor into the display connector and have a multi monitor setup!! This is what I am doing with my old notebook and it is near silent too.

They come without blu ray for about £250, even cheaper..

If you did want a case, maybe something like this..
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Silve...th-fanless-PSU but given the extreme lack of graphics options you will no doubt end up with an AMD IGP solution for graphics... or an ION board as above.

More of a mini iTX gaming solution

Out of interest, do those Atom Nettops come with an OS?
