    Can i overclock a phenom ii x3 700e?

Also can you confirm if this processor is faster than 7850 BE? doing the math i "think" it is with 3 cores as i just brought it and i cant find any benchmarks for this type of cpu on the web.

    Re: Can i overclock a phenom ii x3 700e?

The phenom II X3 700e runs at 2.4GHz, and is an energy efficent model, running at 65W opposed to the usual 95W for tri cored phenom II CPU's. This is socket AM3.

THe athlon X2 7850BE runs at at 208GHz, is a standard (95W model), and is socket AM2+.

The 700e is a tri (3) core model. As it is a tri core model, opposed to the duel core 7850BE, it will run considrablly faster in multi threaded applications, and games, because there is an extra core. It will also be better for multi-tasking. However the 7850BE does have a slightly higher clock rate, 2.8GHz opposed to 2.4GHz, so will run faster in single threaded applications. Both processors run of the same phenon architecure*

The newer 700e also has a larger cach, and runs in the newer socket (backwards compatable). However it will (probably) not overclock as well, or easily as the 7850BE. In the 7850BE the multiplier is unlocked, so to overclock it, you simply need to raise the multiplier, whereas with the 700e has a locked multiplier, so you need to raise the Front side bus (which you still can do with the 7850BE). **

*see review of 7750 for more info: http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=16614&page=2

**the speed of the CPU is obtained from the FSB times the multiplier. With any BE CPU (extreme for intel) the multiplier is unlocked, making it easier to overclock. By raising the FSB you will also raise the RAM speed, and may need to change the divider between FSB and RAM speed so as not to run the RAM too fast.

A review of some of the phenon CPU's can be seen here. This includes the 720BE, also tri core, but running at a higher clock rate, 2.8GHz (and higher wattage) than yours: http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=17113&page=1 . The 720BE is the closest CPU to yours which has the unlocked multiplier - easier overclocking, but runs at higher wattage - less energy efficent.

    Re: Can i overclock a phenom ii x3 700e?

cheers for the info will404 ! So in thoery to up the speed of my cpu i'd need to raise the fsb and set my divider to match my ram speeds? i'll have the Asus M3A79-T Deluxe AMD 790FX (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard & Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme to play with for this processor then. I'll have to do alot of reading bout this^^ gets pop corn out

Currently waiting on pc parts to be delivered should get everything i need my next friday for the weekend ^^ i'm too embarressed to input system specs iv got atm

I thought the non Black Edition phenom II's have the voltages locked, if that's the case than you wont be able to go far

No i dont plan on overclock far at all^^ not and till i grab me a phenom ii x4 900+ cpu BE. i'd just like to know how i'd safely overclock this via the fsb. could you direct me to any decent links? iv founds afew ppl who have OC'ed there 705e's over 3ghz. my processor is only 100mhz slower than 705e it matchs everything else.

    Check this article out:

    http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardwa...us-tested.html

The energy efficient CPus seem to overclock using lower voltage than the normal processors which is good.

    Re: Can i overclock a phenom ii x3 700e?

WoW ! i could still overclock this puppy too 3.5ghz or more if i wanted to. This chip is not far from 720 BE OC potential ! awesome ! For £65 i cant complain hehe. Very insightfull guide thx alot for all your help guys. I only want to overclock to 2.8ghz - 3.4ghz max.

Its very helpfull to know an OC threshhold for an amd cpu aswell as a cpu-z screenie of the 705e chip bascially the same as mine -100mhz. So, i could potentialy OC the 700e cpu up to 1600mhz over stock value and still be in the safe zone of not blowing my cpu up ? ( taking into account i dont exceed 1.45 volts, i heard its dangerious after that) Also iv brought an Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme SKT 775/AM2+/AM2/939 PWM. Do you think this beasty looking cooler is up to the task? I'll update a validated OC once i get my stuff some time next week ^^

I would stay below 1.4 V to be on the safe side, and to make sure that the CPU lasts a long time.

will do btw iv just figured something out here but im not sure. Say for example i wanted to overclock my cpu from 2.4ghz, 65 watts at stock speed to 3.4ghz...would my wattage increase aswell? iv figured it will be at 140 watt..the maxx my board can take http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...tml?ASU-M3N7TD

    Re: Can i overclock a phenom ii x3 700e?

Your wattage will increase, but not by nearly that much. I will try and find some figures to assume how much it is likely to increase by, but as it wattage is = to volts * amps.

Edit: cant find any articles, but remember that while overclocking you usually disable any power saving features with the CPU, (such as speedstep from intel) these reduce the multiplier and voltage, meaning that the CPU uses less energy, and creates less heat when you are only doing non-intensive tasks. However if you overclock your CPU it is usual to disable these features as they are likely to cause/increase the likelihood of instability. This will mean that even if your CPU is not drawing too many more watts while overclocked (say 75?W opposed to 65W), it will not be reducing its speed and therefore voltage and wattage while not under load. This means that it will constantly be drawing 75?W, instead of drawing the 65W while needed, then reducing to 35?W when not in use. So if you spent half the time surfing the web, and doing simple tasks, and the other half the time doing power hungry tasks, you could see larger increases of the amount of power used.

Also worth noting is that when it is not throttling down, it is producing more heat.

*All wattage figures theoretical, I have no idea of real figures, but would expect the overclocked power draw at 1.4W to be between 70~and~76W - calculated from stock voltage being ~1.2/1.3 volts respectivally.

    Another nice essay

that makes more sense will404 cheers^^ also yeah i brought my cpu off ebay seems like a really sweet deal. Especially if i can luckily unlock the forth core^^ http://shop.ebay.co.uk/merchant/redstripe1976

I just hope my cpu arrives in one piece and it's fully working. says its brand new, god only knows where hes getting em from. From all the good feedbacks i can only assume the seller is nothing but good and true. i'll let you know in a week iv spoken to him says hes posting monday and will get in it next few days £120 for P2 x4 940 chip there ..dont go buying yet i'll let you know how my cpu fairs once it arrives.
