    Samsung Ecodrive 1.5tb

Anyone have any experience with these drives? I had some old spinpoints from Samsung and they _all_ died after 6 months. I want some cheap 1.5tb drives, but my instincts are telling me to stay away. Do they run as cool as all the reviewers say? I think temperature is what caused mine to fail

    Thoughts?

I've had some of the newer spinpoints F1's and found them very good ( they work and have not died = good )
although i have not had any experiance with the 1.5tb i'm in the same boat looking at them

Yup, I'd love to trust them again! Also looking at WD's 1.5TB drive but that's £100 on scan! But I do trust WD...

The middle ground could be Seagate if people don't recommend the Samsung...

    decisions, decisions...

    Re: Samsung Ecodrive 1.5tb

Everyone says samsungs aren't reliable but I've had 2 500GB samsungs for about 2 years still going strong as well a 750GB samsung and I have recently bought the 1.5 TB F2 that was on offer on ebuyer. It runs pretty cool, about 22 degrees in a very poorly ventilated case, not as fast as 7200rpm which is noticable if you want it as a system drive but purely for storage I've found mine to be good. Only had the 1.5tb over a month so hopefully I haven't just jynxed it :|

In recent years ive had about 4 Samsung drives and theyre all still going strong. Not used these ones particularly, but I would say they were worth trying again

It sounds like they're worth a try! The other alternative in the same price range, the Seagate ones, I'm also a bit unsure about: friends still have problems with them in RAID configurations even after updating the firmware.

Thank you guys, I think I will start ordering the Samsungs now for my 5-bay Synology NAS that I will buy next week! :-)

I want to order them individually to make sure I get drives from different batches, so they don't fail all at once! ;-)

    Re: Samsung Ecodrive 1.5tb

I believe the Seagate had their share of problems on the 1.5 TB drive
I got two 320 F1's last year because I could not guarantee the single platter WD 320 would be the ones I got.
One went in my daughters pc and one went in my HTPC ( bedroom )
On the HPTC I did a mod to make it quiet.
Both have performed very well so far
Every HD manufacturer has bad drives / batches you can't always judge by the past
remember the death stars ? well I gave an 80 gig death star away as the rest died (2001 ish)
    its still going strong !!
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

    Re: Samsung Ecodrive 1.5tb

I've had nothing but bad luck with hard drives lately... I bought 3*1.5tb Seagates a while back, they were _all_ DOA. I also had a load of Samsungs die on me. I don't really know which brand to trust now. Though people's posts about the Samsungs here is encouraging! I have a Synology DS508 and want to fill it with drives pretty soon... maybe I'll buy a drive each month, that way I'll avoid bad batches.

I want to put 5 disks into a Synology NAS, I guess I'll have to trust it to cool the disks sufficiently. That's why I am leaning towards the ecodrives, they should run cooler than other alternatives in a NAS.

Shallax's experience is worrying but as someone said here: you can't really judge new drives on the performance of older models. Lets hope Samsung has sorted their quality control and general reliability...

That sounds like bad handling while they were being shipped - one might be unlucky, two - really unlucky - three - too much of a coincidence.

    Re: Samsung Ecodrive 1.5tb

Just ordered 3 1.5tb Ecodrives from Scan *fingers crossed*. I usually try ordering hard drives from different suppliers in the hopes of getting the hard drives from different production batches, however Overclock.co.uk and Tekheads.co.uk seemed to just get stuck on "Payment Pending" (I even called my bank and they said that my account had no attempted transactions from them), so I cancelled and decided to go entirely with Scan.

I'm absolutely amazed by Scan's customer service, low prices and superb website. How do other companies stay in business with Scan in existence?

I'm sure this delivery will be fine! What are the chances of the same thing happening to you twice, ey? ;-)

    +1 to Scan is great!

Got the drives today... the RAID5 is being built:

    ========>............] recovery = 43.3% (634277832/1461995200) finish=204.1min speed=67577K/sec

It'll be 1am before I can even use them However, they're running at a cool 29ºC (even when being thrashed with this rebuild) compared to my 750GB Seagates, which are at 41ºC!

I agree. Every hard drive should have a fan blowing across it. I've not had one fail for ages and ages.

May I suggest Hitachi too? The old DeathStar days are long gone. My Dad has two 500 gig drives that are over 2 years old and both rock solid and I have a new 1tb one and it's much faster than my F1 or WD AAKS and silent too.

    Re: Samsung Ecodrive 1.5tb

I don't mind Hitachi as a brand, they tend to do very well performance wise (whenever they release a new drive, it tends to be one of the fastest amongst 7200RPM drives). The E7K1000 seem to give even the Caviar Black solid competition (winning for desktop use really). BUT - they are never at the forefront when it comes to noise. I wouldn't class the Caviar Black as silent, and it seems that the Hitachi is more or less at that noise level.
