Performance difference between AMD chipsets 770/780/790

Woul dany one happen to be able to advise what the performance difference between the 770, 780 amd 790 chipsets are? Is there any?

With regards to the SB 700, 710 and 750 is there much difference except for the ACC funtion on the 710 and 750?

The internet is doing my headin trying to find a decent answer.

Re: Performance difference between AMD chipsets 770/780/790

Performance-wise, there's not a huge difference between any of them - the main difference is the feature-set (number of PCIe channels, crossfire support, RAID modes etc.). The 790-series have more PCIe lanes than 770 and support proper crossfire, for instance; the SB750 has RAID5 capability in addition to the 1, 0, and 10 supported by the 700/710.

But in terms of overall PC performance, the exact chipset you choose isn't going to have any significant effect.

Also the higher numbers have better integrated graphics, and letters make a difference too - the 780V uses a Radeon 3100 and the 780G uses a 3200. Other than that I'm not really sure.

Re: Performance difference between AMD chipsets 770/780/790

The SB750 is the full fat southbridge and the SB700 and SB710 are the diet versions.

The 790X can only address 2 PCI-E 2.0 slots at 8x and the 790FX can address at least two(and as many as 4) PCI-E 2.0 slots at 16x. The 790GX is similar to the 790X but has an IGP too. The 760G,780V and 780G are very similar and only differ in the versions of the HD3000 series IGP they have and whether they have the SB700 or SB710 southbridge. The 770 chipset basically is similar to 760G/780V/780G but has no IGP and the SB710 southbridge. There are some earlier versions of the 790X,790FX and 770 which have the older SB600 southbridge.

Basically if you do not want an IGP and have no need for crossfire the 770 chipset with the SB710 southbridge will do the job and will have most of the performance of the more expensive 790 series chipset motherboards.

Re: Performance difference between AMD chipsets 770/780/790

I tend to say 770 or 790X for basic and midrange systems, 790FX for crossfire setups, and 790GX if you want integrated graphics. I tend not to recommend the cheap chipsets as the boards aren't made especially well in most cases.

Re: Performance difference between AMD chipsets 770/780/790

Thanks all for you responses. Would anyone happen to know or have seen a good 770 or 790x with 710/750SB?

I was thinking of a new AM2+ rig with a P2 x2 550 overclocked (or even better with cores unlocked) so the ACC is a must. I do not think I will upgrade for 5 years so AM3 will be superceded by then. Although if there is a good AM3 equivelent price to AM2+; the cost of DDR3 vs DDR2 is no longer a major issue.

Bells and whistles are not important. Crossfire and onboard graphics is not an improtant. i am shoppingfrom the budget end really and hope to pick up a better graphics card after using my x1950pro for a few months and saved up some more cash.

Heatsinks on the mobo are a big plus; something mean looking like this MSI DKA790GX!

    I think I have about £65 +/- £5 even less is better.

    I have found these:-

GA-MA790X-UD4 at about £68 but scan don't stock it as of a few days ago and it does not support the 550 according to the webiste; gigabyte said I should keep checking the cpu list incase it is tested(?). It had has the mosfet(?) coolers which make it look mean! I think it has been superceded.

GA-MA770-UD3 is out of stock at scan but is priced at a reasonable £56.

or from one of my favourite supplier the A780GXH/128M at about £50 with plenty of useless crossfire.

The MSI above comes in at about £90 with postage.

I can't help but notice you both still run first-gen A64 systems. Perhaps if you saw a current ASRock board you'd reconsider...

How come? They seem to get good reviews still.

Re: Performance difference between AMD chipsets 770/780/790

nothing to do with how good their actual products are to start with, ASRock always produced some of the most ingenius boards ever, like the ones with both AGP and PCIe slots on them.
Browse a lot of tech forums though and...
Thread 1: I've got this dead ASRock board and I need to replace it.,,
Thread 2: I need a new Mobo since my ASRock died...
Thread 3: What's a good motherboard? My ASRock one stopped working...

    etc. etc.
I probably see that more often than ECS, because people aren't dumb enough to buy ECS boards much any more, thank god.

I've not seen that very much at all, at most it's proportionate to the volume of product surely? Warranty on them seems just as long as other brands, which it wouldn't be if they had a higher failure rate, and their support service is excellent (I've not had to use them for faults, but I have inquired about compatabilities and they've always given excellent support even for my very old board).

Their tech support is meant to be pretty good (certainly compared to their parent company Asus) but I see more failed ASRock boards than any other, and I wouldn't have considered them the largest brand.
