    X-Box

ok, just think, if the xbox could load an os and had proper drivers for everything, I wonder how good it would bench (3dmark 00/01, Quake 3, UT 2003 etc).

I suppose a similar system would be:

    AMD Duron 800mhz
    Nforce 1 dual channel MB
    2 x 128MB Ram
    GF3 ti 500
    20 Gig HD
    DVD

I think that the majority of people (not us that know better...) underestimate the potential of the pc compared to the xbox.

    Just some thoughts...

Have a clue how it would perform, but the architecture is more efficient on the xbox i suppose.

    Would an equivelent be..
AMD Duron 600mhz (Xbox has 700mhz Celeron)
    Nforce 1
    1 X 64MB 2100 DDR Ram
GF3 1/2 (The halve is because it has 2 texture unit's like the GF4)
    8 Gigabyte HD
    DVD

ok, just think, if the xbox could load an os and had proper drivers for everything, I wonder how good it would bench (3dmark 00/01, Quake 3, UT 2003 etc). It would certainly run very slowly and constantly be loading from the HD, as the Xbox operating system is purely for gaming and normally loads from the DVD when playing a game.

    Anyone have a clue?

I doubt the x-box spec would really cut the mustard if it had to run a monitor at 1024+ resolutions *and* deal with a full Windows OS, all it has to deal with is 640*480 or 800*600 at 60Hz during it's normal use.
Hell, you'd be better off buying a Shuttle, it'd probably be smaller for a start

In terms of what PC would you need to get comparitive perf to the X-box I'd say something like this:

    Athlon 1.4ghz
    256MB DDR
    GF4TI4200

As said the X-box is practically a dedicated machine rather than multi-functional PC and only has to do one thing at a time unlike our poor desktop PCs BUT the biggest advanatage the X-box has is using a TV as the display device. The blurry low res image is enough to make both AA and AF pointless, the blurriness of a TV already gives an AA effect while you won't see sharp textures anywhere regardless of AF. You don't need to worry too much about FPS as the 50/60Hz interlaced TV will largely negate high FPS. Heck the above PC is better even when running a dozen background tasks and a full 'multi-tasking' OS!

Good comments mate, too true about the AA and stuff too. If we could get xbox pads on the pc and good conversions of the games, I think trhe games companies would make massive profits.

Is there an Xbox emu out yet? Anyone?

Wheres Joe when you need him? He would know all about this stuff.

I know a PS2 is suppose to be around the same power as a Tbird 1000.

I know you can get a converter for a PS1 pad so I am guessing that it would work with the PS2 pads.

The PS pads are much better than the Xbox ones, I just can not get one with the Xbox controllers.

Looks like theres a converter for every pad (PS/PS2/N64/Xbox) on the above link! yay!

Only a tenner too (for the PS/PS2 one), way better than any MS pad

I think it would really round off the PC if you could easily and cheaply attatch multiple X-box controllers and have them officially supported in most games. No matter how much better FIFA (etc) look on even an averagely powerful PC compared to PS2 it's pretty pointless unless you can get at least 2 players banging away simultaneously. Of course another nice add-on would be an easy to set up DUAL BOOT installer which allows you to swap to X-box type mode and simply be able to stick the game CD in with no installing / patching / sharing resources etc.

If these could become common place (and it's certainly technically feasible) then X-box would get a big boost (user-wise), gaming on PCs would hit an extra level (esp in true plug n play) and Sony would really have a true competitor ...
