Gainward HD 4870X2 where have you gone?!
When i bought my pc last september, i bought the Gainward HD 4870X2 at £340 now i've gone to buy a second one there isnt one anywhere, none on any of the best pc hardware sites and none on ebay. Has this been recalled or something? or is it a case if i did put the card i have now on ebay i may get more for it as someone might be in the same situation i am and may pay over the odds for a 2nd hand card?
Re: Gainward HD 4870X2 where have you gone?!
Are you planning to go crossfire? If so you can do that with any 4870X2.

surely you could use another brand?
Re: Gainward HD 4870X2 where have you gone?!
Standard HD4870X2 cards have plummeted in price to around £240 mark now. Why cannot you get one of these cards??

I did not know that at all, isnt that hybrid or something?

Only the GPU's need to be matching, the brand isn't necessary. I think that use to be the case with SLI along time ago (Needed matching BIOS), but even SLI eradicated that problem.
What resolution are you gaming at?
Re: Gainward HD 4870X2 where have you gone?!
1680 x 1050 atm because its my monitors max, but im buying a full 1080p one
Is this an amazing deal or am i wrong?
2 x HD4870x2 sapphire for £290 (NEW) with shipping?
Re: Gainward HD 4870X2 where have you gone?!
hybrid is where you use onboard graphics with the seperate card, usually the ones lower down in the range.
the thing you do need to look out for is whether your current one and the new one have the same speeds - the core clock MHZ, memory clock. as the faster one will downclock itself to the slower one.
and im asuming its the PC in your 'my system' on the left. has it got 2 more PCI-E connectors - the 6+2pin or 8pin ones?
and dont forget to reinstall your graphics drivers after putting the new one in. might be configured for just 1 card at the moment.

Isn't a 4870X2 enough for 1980*1080p
Re: Gainward HD 4870X2 where have you gone?!
Just to explain: ATI and their other partners weren't happy when gainward started making a couple of custom cards: In particular they fitted a 4850 with DDR5 (effectively an underclocked 4870).
Other partners weren't happy, and Gainward had a falling out with ATI over it.
Hence why Gainward doesn't sell a 4890. If they are wrapping up their ATI range then that would explain why you can't find an X2 by them- they may have already stopped making them.
Eitherway- as has been suggested, any other board partner will work just as well, so no need to worry.
My friend is Cross-firing two 4870s, one is a powercolour 512MB and the other is a Sapphire 1GB, so you'll be ok.. and Crossfire supports hybrid/combinations of the 48XX series anyway, though ideally you'd want to add a 4870 or 4870X2 to your existing card.
I was going to post how you needn't bother @ 1650, but then saw your other post about a monitor upgrade, if you can get a good deal on a second card jump on it and sit out the DX11 stuff for a while..
Re: Gainward HD 4870X2 where have you gone?!
That offer is for 2 of the cards not just one, both of them £290 delivered
When normally it would be £500.
I'm not that fussed by DX11 because when DX10 GFX cards came out it took round about a year for all the games to start using it, so i can always upgrade to dx11 at a later date
Cheers for the gainward info! i wondered why i couldnt find a single one anywhere.
EDIT:
Actually i think im wrong about that offer, the way they have advertised it is misleading

I would say yes unless you were planning to play at 2500*1600 with AA, one 4870X2 will easily handle every game out there.
Re: Gainward HD 4870X2 where have you gone?!
To reiterate, any 4870X2 can combine with any 4870X2, or indeed, any 4870. I would recommend getting a different PSU though as I mentioned in your other thread, Enermax Galaxy units have a tendency to be nowhere near 1000W. I like 4870 quad crossfire, it's pretty powerful in the games that make use of it, but it's certainly pricey, and also only really necessary for 2560x1600. Its use for 1920x1200 is a little odd, at 1680x1050 is laughable. I'd spend the money on a bigger monitor rather than a second card because at that res you just don't need it.

Even with full load and a decent overclock I would estimate his system, even with a second 4870X2, will top out around 800W-850W anyway.
Re: Gainward HD 4870X2 where have you gone?!
Nah, my PC (see specs tab) maxes out at about 810W a.c., which factoring in PSU efficiency is about 710W DC. As you see, I run an 850W PSU fine with this setup. However, the Enermax Galaxy units are pretty poor, so I wouldn't want to run that much power through one. (this is from the experience of someone on another forum, in fact a reviewer, he went from a Galaxy to a Corsair HX 1KW and had much better luck)
