What to expect from a typical netbook

By typical I mean, N270 1.6GHz, 1Gb ram (maybe 2), 120Gb HDD, Intel graphics, that kind of thing.

Are they capable of playing 720p high-def MKV videos? Is there enough poke to run something like Visual Studio 2008? What about Windows 7, can they cope ok?

Finding it difficult to justify one but if they can do the above it would be easier

That partially answers the HD playback question!

If you go for a netbook makes sure it is one of the Ion ones which have the Nvidia 9400M IGP. The IGP can decode most HD stuff well.

Yep deffinatly try for ION (there will be a little wait). The atom is suprisingly strong to me, it can handle most typical apps with relative comfort as you as you aren't actually expecting it to operate (or open) with similar speed to a C2D or X2.

I use mine as a main machine some days, runs an external monitor at 1680 x 1050, plays DVD's (via a usb drive), surf etc.. at the same time and it's great. If you can get one that overclocks that a healthy boost as well (2.0GHz normally).

If you just want a typical atom + intel IGP then i highly recommend the MSI Wind, it does as of the above including warranty backed overclocking and is probably the coolest and quietest running that I've come across on my travels.

However the OP should realise that the much older Pentium M and Pentium M based celerons using DDR and DDR2 were much faster clock for clock than an Atom so don't replace an older notebook with an Atom one unless you are after very long battery life!

For example a 900mhz Celeron M is around the same speed as a 1.6ghz single core Atom processor.
