Hi :)
There's no inherent difference between the two - a fast Intel or a fast AMD will both be great, and a slow Intel or a slow AMD would be not so great. Likewise nVidia or AMD for the GPU.
More important is to get the right model of CPU or GPU - we can help, just tell us how much you are willing to spend and we'll come up with some suggestions.
Re: what is better to play games on intel or Amd
None is better than the other. They all do different things:
Intel CPUs, particularly i7s, handle multi-threaded games better than AMD in general.
AMD CPUs handle single-thread games better than Intel in general.
But, that doesn't mean to say an Intel CPU should be your only choice if you want multily thread, it just means that is something to consider.
nV has support for CUDA and PhysX, protocols through while not widely supported, are important to consider. Video transcoding (Badaboom), CAD, and some games (Mirrors Edge) work much better on nV cards because of this.
ATi, on the other hand, better support the DX standards, their cards a slightly cheaper for the mid range cards, and they usually have better after market coolers (mainly because they need them, their cards tend to run VERY hot).
So we cannot answer your question, instead, ask the following: I want a computer to do x, y and z and I want to spend about £xxxx. We will be better equiped to help you there.

They run hotter then nVidia because they run the fans slower to keep them quieter.
The chips are not inherently hotter by design.

I didn't say it was a detriment to performance. I am aware they are meant to run hot.
Further more I was complimenting them because they have a huge range of coolers.
Why is impossible to remain neutral? Yes I have an Intel Core i7, yes I have an nV 295, so what, that doesn't mean I am a fan of either company, they just suit my needs.

"Because they need them"
Doesn't sound too impartial, nor a compliment.

I'm sorry I forgot the implied "if you want to overclock them". :)
Re: what is better to play games on intel or Amd
They each have their perks as nightkhaos said.
Read some reviews and work out your budget, that way you can determine whats best for you. If you do some research into the products out there and workout your needs, you will be suprised to find that a decent AMD or Intel system doesnt cost the earth.
I was AMD all the way up until i build this i7 rig, for gaming anyway. Much like everyone, i just go for practicallity and whats best for your money :)
Forgot to add, recently purchasing an ATi card, i feel it runs alot better than the previous nvidia cards i have had. Feels like you have alot more control over the OC etc. Also i wouldnt say they run overly hot, the temp they run at is pretty justified. I think i have only had mine at 70% fan speed max and that was on a boiling hot day.
Re: what is better to play games on intel or Amd
well i've had a look around and come across the intel i7 (alot of money to be honest) and the amd black edition x2/x4 both versions sound good but i dont want to spend too much on a cpu than other components
Re: what is better to play games on intel or Amd
Have a look round these forums, Cat the fifth has done numerous AMD builds that are within a budget. i7 isnt the only solution to "what processor do i buy", AMD do great alternatives and theyre usually cheaper.
I suggest you list how much you are willing to spend on each component and let everyone contribute from there. Itll be easier for you to get what you want that way.
Re: what is better to play games on intel or Amd
Aye, give us an overall intended budget. I understand that an i7 may be too expensive, but going to a socket 775 processor or an AM2 processer is no big deal, there are some processors which will still work really well. The Q6600 for example off the top of my head.
Re: what is better to play games on intel or Amd
I am still running a Q6600 and i can find no reason at all to change it. :)
It does absolutely everything i want it to and blerdy quickly at that :D

I have one for aging 975x based main PC and it was an excellent choice.
However if I was building a new rig there are better alternatives out there at the moment.
To the OP what processor and graphics card you go for is dependent on your budget and what resolution you play at.
Re: what is better to play games on intel or Amd
Black, why is you never seem to finish you posts. I see one from two months ago for you speccing a system. Did you find more money since then or something? Or is your budget still £200?
I'm also concerned, it almost seems as if you are trolling from your post history.
Let me explain, and someone stop me if my perceptions of forum reality are completely warped and I need my head checked:
There seems to be four types of posters on forums in general, spamers, trollers, "I need something", and regular posters.
You do not fit under spammers because you're not advertising, you don't fit under trollers because you this post is the only one that would cause contriversity, and it didn't, you're not "I need something" because any threads you start you never finish and you haven't taking as many posts as possible to get 20 for free shipping, and you're not a regular poster because, well, you don't post regularly.

Sorry to go OT but...
Nightkaos, how about chilling out and just letting other people post?
As you say yourself, he certainly doesn't seem to trying to sell anything or pimping his post count so just let him post as he likes, if you don't like it ignore the threads.
Personally I spent over a year considering options and looking at specs for my most recent PC while I was waiting for the right time to build it, so just relax and let him consider his build in his own time.
