PSU upgrade time

when i upgraded my rig from a Q6600 system to a I7 i left in the 850W Enermax Galaxy PSU,

now its time to build Dad a new rig and i still have the striker extreme Q6600 and 4GB DDR2 sat in the cupboard, so the logical step is to donate the 850W to that build as it worked fine in there.


The question remains as to the new PSU..

i have been hankering over the Enermax revolution 85+ 1250W as that seems up to the job, any other suggestions or shall i go for it ?

It would probably be cheaper to ditch your power hungry 8800GTX and get a GTS250 to replace it.

Then you could go with a cheaper PSU like a Corsair HX850w or HX1000w.

the 8800GTX was going to go into the old mans rig anyway, i looked at the corsair specs but the ampage per rail was about 50% less than the enermax.

with future overclocking as new chips come out and new viddy cards going in im after as much power as possible.

When i sold my Hiper 580w i went with a Silverstone DA 750w.

TBH, it's amazing. Modular, 4x6pin and 1x8pin. Silent and i havn't had a single issue.

Mates claim corsair are the best, but i went with Silverstone and don't regret it.

Seriously, consider them.

Enermax 1050w? They are rated up to 1200w anyway or something, be perfect!

I think that anything over 1000w is pointless with ONE GTX280 and even an overclocked Core i7 processor. The fact is that a decent 750w to 850w PSU will do fine.

If you have got something like an overclocked Core i7 and a pair of HD4870X2 or GTX295 graphics cards I could understand but if anything the future 32nm Intel releases will reduce their power consumption per mhz not increase it!!

I have seen other reviews powering their Core i7 test rigs with 1000w PSUs using dual HD4870X2 or dual GTX295 graphics cards.

My mode of transport has a 7 litre engine!! Yep, I travel on the bus....! Very useful when a bit drunk though....!

It seems both Corsair and Enermax PSU's supply more than their actual rating due to their quality. I think the only choice is between these two manufacturers. Personally I have always liked the Corsair and with a 5 year warranty returnable to Scan would always make my decision.

Either way you can't make a Bad choice.

I'm currently running a 3.6GHz i7 920 and two HD4870s on a Corsair TX 650W!

I have a feeling the TX 650 isn't very happy and needs an upgrade soon but it goes to show you don't need a 1KW PSU.

As mentioned, a 850W will do with some juice to spare. The Corsair TX 850W looks good at £105, think I'm going to get one soon.

more thought toward this is the 1250 (1500) version will run cooler with less fan noise. i already water cool everything on the board, cpu and GPU so quiet and powerfull + cool running is a must

An 8800GTX with a 1250W? I could run one of those off a Corsair VX 450W... DDY proves my point. I only have an 850W Zalman for two HD4870X2s and an overclocked Q9550. I'm about 130W under at 720W for full load, and I mean full, it rarely gets that high.
GoNz0: The quietest PSU I have ever seen is the Zalman ZM850-HP (the 1000W is meant to be the same). At full 700W load it's still as quiet as a Nexus realsilent case fan (about 15-16dB). The Corsair HX 1000W was OK-ish at idle (about 21dB) but quickly got loud (40dB+) as soon as it was under load. The Zalman is incredible, and is regarded at Silentpcreview as the best high-output power supply ever made for low noise.

didnt you read it all same, the 8800 is a physics card under the clocked 280 thats hoping to get a pair of twin 280's to keep it company

i jsut did a PSU calc and got in just under 1000w, based on that i think im going to air on the safe side and get the 1250 beast. no idea how some of you came up with the lower power versions when i said i wanted to upgrade, but thanks anyway.

it is quite a busy PC with dual loop, 6 hard drives, 2 DVD RAM etc so i do wonder if the 850 is causing the odd cold boot issue with cap aging kiking in.

Bit of careful plumbing and you could link the system to your central heating system instead of the rad on the back of the box! First PC powered central heating system! Enjoy the upgrade - it will be quite some machine!
