    TV/Monitor Malfunction

Alright, whilst I know this isn't the best place to ask for HDTV support I thought that you're all an intelligent bunch of people and may have had previous experience with these things or even on the off chance have a vague idea of whats happened. If you can help me, there's a big reward in the form of Kev love as this means that my room gets graced with presence of a 42'' HDTV to replace the 10 year old CRT I've been using, even if it is just till the end of the summer holidays.

Basically, last friday my mother came in too the living room to watch her early morning soaps (or whatever mothers watch), switched on the tv and... nothing happened. The little power indicator on the bottom of the screen switched green from red and thats it. After unplugging the tele, giving it a moments rest as well as plugging into a different household socket the results were still flat. Basically all that will happen is that the TV will respond to being plugged in by going into standby and seems to "verify" being turned on by changing green but nothing else works. No picture, no sound and none of the on-board switches work such as the ON/OFF button meaning the TV can't even be turned off. It basically stops responding.

Immediate thought was that whatever PSU the TV uses has burned out and isn't supplying the tv with enough juice to work. I also reckoned that it could be to do with the wiring or something. Unfortunately my dad won't let me whack it open to take a look as he wants to rely on the "TV Support Service" at PCWorld.

There were literally no symptoms that led up to this failure, could it be that the TV has just had it? Not that it bothers my father who effiecently went and replaced it with a 46'' alternative but I could REALLY do with playing CoD 4 on a better screen.

Ta in response for the replies guys.

If somethings new its nearly always best to just return it, y didn't u get a direct replacement of the same TV modal? I don't understand ur fault it does seem weird it does just sound like a bad connection. U r quite lucky when i first got a new LCD TV after a week i turned it on and smoke was comming out the top which was well scary

    Re: TV/Monitor Malfunction

According to my dad the TV is 2 years old and he bought it off ebay through some Power-Seller UK store. Came with a years warranty, which unfortunately doesn't help.

It's a pity he won't let me have a closer look at it, he won't even let me plug it into anything in case it exacerbates the problem.

In case it helps the brand and model is: hitachi L42VP01U

    Re: TV/Monitor Malfunction

Contact Hitachi UK and see what their repair policy is. If it is two years old spares should be available.

    Re: TV/Monitor Malfunction

Apparently IT IS a problem with the PSU and there is a replacement part available. We've gotten an expert to do the dirty work and hopefully I'll be questing in Albion in 1080p in a short while.

    Re: TV/Monitor Malfunction

Got the results back and it isn't too good.

PCB has blown and needs replacing, they're charging £300 for the part and £100 labour. Cheapest I've managed to find a replacement PCB for the Hitachi L42VP01U is £365. Anyone know if there's a cheaper alternative elsewhere and would it be reasonable to think I could fix this?

Is what I'm looking at, at the moment.
