Is my PC dead?

Hi

I have a work PC which is 6 years old unfortunaltley out of service contract and it has some specalist software on it. Howerver it now won't boot, it powers up fine so it's not the PSU it get as far as the mem test then nothing. I can't get into bios setup. So has my memory died? Could it be my Harddrive or motherboard?

I'd agree with Blaine, you could spend a lot of time diagnosing and fixing whatever problem you have but at 6 years old it's more than worth just investing in a new PC.

Have you tried only running the PC with 1 memory stick at a time? Also might be worth removing the motherboard battery for 30 secs or so to reset your BIOS.

Memory or HDD probably.

As others have said though, at 6 years old you might as well buy a new PC, transfer the software (if the HDD isn't dead!) and then get an evaluation for your old PC next time Antiques Roadshow is in your area

I agree with everyone's comments. The problem could be any one of the 3 - ram, mb, hdd. If there is another similar PC at your workplace, I'd suggest testing the suspect ram and hdd in a working PC to find out which component is causing the problem by process of elimination.

Absolutely not the HDD. Would get further. Memory failure usually gets beeps, so I'm guessing it's the mobo. The only way to be certain though is to swap out bits.

Yes try and borrow some ram from someone and see if that will sort it out.
Is there any beeping noises?

No beeping noises I will try and change the ram today see what happens.

At least cut it down to the bare minimum as well, all you should need is a PSU, motherboard, CPU and RAM to make some progress.

Thorsson said earlier it couldn't be the HD for example - if it wasn't just broken though, but has an electrical fault, it could cause problems similar to what you're seeing.
