Well for a complete pc that's not a bad price.
Not cutting edge but not half bad.
The weak points are the graphics card and potentially the psu
The early Hiper Type-R werevery well thought of but the later ones took a bit hit in quality.
while 480watts is not a great deal, that system probably only uses 300watts max probably less.
Most people have a PSU which is far overrate for their system, the reasons are, 1- overestimation of power needed, 2- being on the safe side, both age and temp reduce the output and effecienty of a psu, voltage noise and stability are often more important than total wattage, 3- They lie! so many companies fudge there numbers to some extent so it's often best to err on the side of caution just incase.
If you where thinking of putting something better you may want to replace that psu just incase.
All depends on what you plan to do with it.
The motherboard while the older 965 chipset is still an overall good one, capable of decent overclocking and not lacking anything major.
It's not pci-e 2.0 but you have to be looking at a current high end or dual gpu card before that has any impact.
Simular goes for 2gb of memory, 4gb is more common now but mainly because of the low cost, there's not a big difference between 2gb and 4gb
Same goes for a dual core cpu, sure a quad core is better but for most of the time a dual core is fine and the extra is often going to waste.
I've had no major issues with my current pc in my specs and apart from gpu there's not a lot of difference.
Granted I don't play Crysis but that game was and still is a pig in trems of system demands.
EDIT: I've just upgraded my ram to 4gb not because I had issues with 2gb but just that it was hardly high end and I wanted to push my OC past 3.0ghz and taht seemed to be the limiting factor.
That would have been a semi-budget build a year or so back. It's ok but I wouldn't spend £300 on it unless you really need the screen. That screen isn't worth £100 imo, they aren't brilliant quality and normal aspect ratio is getting less and less desirable.
hey guys thanks for the detailed response. i decided not to get that computer. the cool case is what really attracted me in the first place tbh, i think i may build my own when i have time :)
thanks again:)
Isn't that the Antec 900 (v1, :))?
I'm pretty sure it is, well I do have one.
Is indeed a P35, would need to be to run that PSU.
Can buy the monitor alone for around £30 rather than the £100 as the chap says but he's only trying to make a sale ;)
Component parts new would be around the same price hence not worth it.
opps, missread thought it was the P5B
?? it's got nothing to do with the psu, if you mean cpu, then no that incorrect.
The 965 chipset can support the faster c2d chips all the way up to 1333fsb c2d

All it requires is a BIOS update.
Just because wide screen is more popular doen't mean it's any better, infact it's often better than a wide screen in some situations.
Anything that requires more height than width, esp as widscreen monitors are shorter, you'd have to get a 24" widescreen to get something with the same vertical height.
And to get a new 19" non-wide screen monitor now you are looking at £100+
2nd hand £45+
PS if that is the glass fronted version then you're looking £150-200 new
You could get a better spec'd, brand new AMD Athlon II based system with a 22 monitor for not a lot more.
vince, steve A is selling a £300 PC alot better IMO

If the copies of Vista and Office are original it is actually not too bad for the price as the software would cost you £100+ excluding any hardware.
However if you do not need a screen and are willing to run Windows 7 RC1 until early next year you can do a better build for around £360.
Something along these lines:
Phenom X2 545 ~ £68
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168972
Gigabyte MA770-UD3 revision 2 ~ £54
http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx
4gb DDR2 ~ £36
http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx
OCZ 400W StealthXStream PSU ~£35
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152505
Antec 300 Three Hundred Black Case ~ £45
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143854
Samsung 320gb F1 hard drive ~ £34
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/320-G...MB-Cache-89-ms
DVD rewriter~ £15
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/134324
HD4850 512mb ~ £77
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169198
Total ~ £364
Go on then price it
Remember that pirce includes Windows Vista Ultimate and Microsoft office 2007
If that office is the home&student version that's £70 if it's the professional version that's £300
Vista ultimate 32bit is £120 or £135 for 64bit
So that's between £190 and £435 off the budget to start with
Leaveing £110 to -£135 to build the rest with, you'll not get far on that.
EDIT: As Cat has just shown, £360, sans software, keyboard & mouse, speakers, monitor and the case is not as good (granted the 300 is good and for what's in it I think it's fine)
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Antec...op-Fan-w-o-PSU
The Antec 900 is £80 so swap the 300 for the 900 and the budget is £395 , sans software, keyboard & mouse, speakers, monitor
EDIT2: The system Steve A is selling is very nice for £300 :)
I would make sure that the software was original and if you are student the Ultimate Steal deals mean that you can get Vista Ultimate and Office Ultimate for under £40 each. Even then £220 for the computer advertised is not too bad since it has all the bits included. However the only suspect part maybe the PSU as Hiper ones can have issues although they are still better than most generic crap.
TBH,I am still a bit surprised what can be built for under £400 nowadays even without an OS. The build I specced should be fine with most modern games at 1440x900 and 1680x1050.
I suppose if you really want to cut costs you could get a Coolermaster Elite case for around £30 and an X2 250 for around £56 so the total would be closer to £340.
Edit!!
Wow! SteveA has an absolutely brilliant system for £300. If I had the money I would probably buy it myself!! A Q9300 and a GTX260 for £300 - that is a crazy price(in a good way)!!
wow, thanks for the build spec. list. i think i will build one over christmas based on your list! i think i may go with the antec mini though. want a really small computer with enough power to be something that i can use for a fairly long time. but that meant i have to get a micro MB :(
with regards to the build and soft/hardware. assume that we pay nothing for software. how much do you think it will cost for a near silent PC?
the main things that i will want is an antec mini p180 (or something stylish and relatively small compared to my current antec p182), a GPU that can run CoD on say 1680*1080 that can be passively cooled with accelero S1, and a processor that is ok (i dont do overclocking) plus a corsair PSU. they have been good for the current build and are respected amongst them community lol
