    Exclamation Urgent Help

Got a compaq presario here and the mobo has just died, not sure if its taken the cpu with it, il test that later tonight. If it hasnt..then i need a new mobo for it.

Can anyone reccommend one that will work with this cpu ? Also what ddr2 will work with it as the cpu fsb is only 533mhz.

    Cheers guys.

    The cpu is this P4.

    http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SL8PN

Or...if there isnt a motherboard sub £50 that will fit it, what cpu/mobo combo would you go for ? its a gaming pc on a budget, already has a silverpower 400w psu, 8800gt, dvd-rw and hdd. Literally just needs a case, mobo and cpu if its dead.

    Looks like this

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Gigab...A-II-Micro-ATX

Is the only one that will work with this CPU, others support P4 just not this model.

What ddr2 ram should it be running ? As the fsb of the cpu is only 533mhz..., it was running pc4200 (533mhz) but its hard to come by now, would 667 work but just get clocked down to 533mhz ?

Yeah any ram will work, as you say they will clock down to what they need to be.

Heck for that cpu almopst anything will be fine.
even the old 945 or 915 will work, although there where reliability issues with them, which is probably the reason you're died
I know at work we've lost about three 945 motherboard in the last 3 months and some of the others have had other non-fatal issues.

However you may want to look at a half decent chips set, G31 or better, then at least you should have to option to later upgrade to one of the lowcost pentium dual cores or a 2nd hand core2duo
memory any 533mhz should be fine or faster, I'd look at a couple of these http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/2GB-C...Unbuffered-CL5 or even just one for now
would not matter if you cannot overclock it, as you'd not need to to overclock the cpu.
Remember intel "quad pump" there cpu fsb, so the actual system fsb for that P4 is only 133mhz
That ram would also be fine if you upgraded cpu, to a pentium dual core or c2d as you could still OC at 1:1 ratio without going past the memorys rated speed.

Cheers for that imformative post, i cannot take responsibility for this machine, its a family members, mine..lets just say, i added to my e-penis today with a 4890 lol.

So this gigabyte mobo (that states on the gigabyte website it will work fine with the 519k cpu)

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Gigab...A-II-Micro-ATX

And 2gb of corsair 667, should see it back to life ?

    Re: Urgent Help

Purhapse then..if the ram is going to get clocked down anyway..a single stick of 2gb 800mhz corsair ? For future proofing a little bit, then when he decides to go C2D he could buy another 2gb stick and have a nice little machine ? But for now it would just run @ 533mhz (ive never experienced ram working slower than its recommended speed, so im taking you guys word for it.)

    It's down there

and on the cheap, look at pc6400 800mhz I linked to it's a couple of quid cheaper than the slower pc5300 (667mhz), you can run it under rated or just set the multiplier to get it too it's correct 400mhz (remember cpu fsb is 4x the actual fsb, memory speed is 2x the actual fsb)
I'm guessing that while you take no responsibility for it, it's muggings who has to set this up and repair it.

EDIT: PS grab yourself a copy of CPU-Z if you don't already have it and see what it says about your current memory, if you got the same pc6400 OCZ reaper as I've got it lists the timeings for all the standard JEDEC approved speeds I could run this stuff at 266mhz (533mhz)
And I've run pc6400 in motherboards which only supported up to 666mhz without issue.

lol spot on with the muggins part, usually i dont touch anything that i havent built...especially this premade hippy crap. With regards to the ram, thats the exact stuff ive just looked at this second, hopefully it will set itself to run lower so i dont have to mess about with any multipliers.

Failing this and if he decides to opt for a new cpu and mobo (he may need a cpu yet, not tested his yet), what would you recommend..on the cheap mind !

Will be playing games on it, and then general usage. Something as powerful as this p4 or a little bit more..just nothing slower (is that even possible now?)

Cheers for your help btw buddy your a star.

    Re: Urgent Help

One word of warning, you may get issues with windows, changeing motherboards on it can give it real issues.
Basically when you change boards it will still try to use the old motherboard drivers, even after installing the correct drivers.
Sometimes you can get away with it sometimes not.

Tempted to just whack vista 32bit on it if he has a cpu upgrade, although...if he does upgrade the cpu, i will be going down the AMD x2 route, as they are so much cheaper than intel !

I'd personally do the AMD upgrade as well. Won't cost that much more and it'll be sound for along time
