Intel E5000 series and Athlon X2 200 series clock for clock comparison
In 2 out of the 4 non gaming tests the E5000 is better and these were winrar and rendering(decent wins there). In H264 decoding the E5000 series was slightly ahead too. However it was beaten in encoding by a decent margin by the X2.In 4 out of the 6 gaming tests the Athlon X2 is faster clock for clock(above5%) and in 2 the E5000 series was ahead(around 2.5%):

Hence since the Athlon X2 processors are typically clocked higher than their E5000 series counterparts for gaming and encoding use it seems they are the better choice!! :)
The test platform used P45 and 770 based motherboards with the same DDR2 memory. A GTX260 was used too and the tests were run under Vista SP1.

These results seem to replicate my opionions of various processors. I still generally recommend Intel however, because they can be clocked higher because they don't run as hot as their AMD counterparts. If you don't overclock however, the AMD is clearly a better choice. :)

The problem is that in the past there were some very cheap motherboards available to overclock Intel processors well like the Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L which were under £60. Even newer motherboards like the EP43-DS3L and EP43-UD3L which are great for budget overclocking are hard to get hold off and are above £60 generally.
Of course with the release of 770 based motherboards with the SB710 southbridge AMD now has a number of motherboards for under £60 which are superb for the budget overclocker. One is the DDR2 Gigabyte MA770-UD3:

Most people can get the Athlon X2 200 series processors to at least 3.5ghz to 3.6ghz so an E5000 would have to be clocked higher to match it in games.
Anyway there is so much choice for the budget gamer nowadays!! :)

I guess that is the problem with dealing with the latest and greatest (see current rig for example), you tend to forget how prices change with new releases. :)
