Router Frustration - Port opening

Iv been trying to get Warcraft 3 up & running again to play online. For some reason i cant host any games. Iv tried a Belkin, Linksys(sp) & Netgear router but all of them block the port required, on all 3 of them i have gone into the settings and open the required port (6112), and tried the various TCP/UDP settings before saving the changes. For some reason though this makes no difference, port checking websites still detect it as closed & i am still unable to host.

Why do these routers have the settings, when they flat out don't work? I have nothing but the basic Windows Firewall, set to allow wc3 to connect to the internet yet nothing seems to get through. Im running Windows 7 (64bit).

Have you checked it's not windows firewall blocking the connection on your PC?

AFAIK windows firewall isnt an issue, iv allowed wc3 under its settings but ill double check now by disabling it.

edit; turned windows firewall off & still the port is blocked. it is still set to allow it under the Belkin settings though.

Does the router have uPnP support?

* Allow port 6112 TCP out
* Allow port 6112 TCP in
* Allow port 6113-6119 TCP out and in

Im not sure about uPNP, all iv got is TCP and UDP options to select (one or the other). It will let me slect individual ports, but how to i open a range of them?

And finally, how do i know which is 'in' and which is 'out'?

It's unlikely your firewall has controls to stop outbound traffic so you just need to open the ports - one by one if you can't define a range.

Iv opened all the ports & yet still cant host. This is so frustrating, especially as i went through the same routine (opening the ports correctly afaik) on 2 other routers without much luck.

On the screen shot you've posted you don't appear to be able to tell router/firewall which port to forward the traffic to... As well as opening the port your router needs to know where to send the traffic. This is done automatically if your program uses UPNP (and the router supports it and hasn't had it turned off). If the program doesn't use UPNP you need to tell the router to forward all traffic on those ports to your PC's IP address (which should either be fixed or you'll need to update the firewall config everytime it changes). Looking at the screenshot try the "Virtual Servers" link.

If I recall correctly (from my last Belkin router), you should be punching in your ports to be forwarded under the "virtual servers" page.

I just noticed that now, he's only opening ports, not mapping them to an internal IP address.

@OP: Use the "Virtual Servers" dialogue in your router config to do it.

Just trying it now. Iv ran ipconfig in the cmd prompt, is it the IPv4 that is my ip address, which is then used in the virtual server tab (i have to set the last digit of the ip address).

Do i need to open up port 6112, or the entire range of ports posted above?

You are running the game when you test the port right?

Usually yes, but i have tried it with both the game running & not.

The reason I ask is that you need three things:

1) Open ports in the firewall
2) A forwarding rule in the firewall

Usually #1 and #2 are combined - i.e. if you set up the virtual server options in the router you're unlikely to need to open the ports as well (#2 should take care of it for you)

3) You need something listening - something to accept the connections - on the forwarding server

Does you router / firewall have logging facilities? If so what (if anything) does it log when you try and connect?


Edit: you are actually entering a port (in the range) in that scanner tool aren't you?

You don't have uPnP on your router? That would be much easier.

Just to test connectivity, I would turn off both hardware and software firewalls. To see if WoW can connect. If it can. Turn the software firewall on, and make a rule/exception to allowed wow.exe (or whatever it's called) for internet access, to act as server and/or client.

Rinse and repeat with hardware firewall.
