I've been looking at alienware laptops as well. I want a good spec laptop(so I can play games so good graphics card is essential) but there will always be a trade off between spec and battery life. I will want to use the laptop away from the mains occasionally so I want fairly good battery life(will only need about 2+ hours though as I am planning to get a second battery).

Anyone know how good the centrino processors are when running games?
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

Ive been playing farcry on a 1.7M for the last week if that's any help. They are the way to go for sure, you get >4hrs on a battery usually too.

EDIT: Problem; splinter cell only detects it as an 800mhz cpu but plays ok?!?

I have the Dell 8600, it plays every game so far very smooth, that's with AA+AF on 4x. It Plays Americas Army no problem with full eye candy.
The Centrino cpu's work extremely fast, I found a chart on't'net and it showed that a 1.7m works at a Pentium 4's 2.6Ghz.

Ima bit gutted tho, cos a wekk after I order my 8600, the 9100 were released. They had P4 3.0 + HT with ATI's 9700 128. All for the same price as my 8600. Gutted. Still pleased with it tho
    Signatures are stupid

Has anyone ever used one of those laptops (I think its only a toshiba) which you can rotate the screen on, and the fold back and use it as a graphics tablet? I am looking at getting a laptop for when I go to university later this year, and they look quite useful as something for writing notes on in lectures, thats if character recognition has been improved since I last tried to use it a few years ago

The Toshiba Portege M200, they are pretty nice, tho the screen is small for the resolution, which is high, if you use it as a laptop. However it works better in tablet mode as you generally hold it closer and so need that extra res. Its hard to say whether or not you would need one, but it would certainly help for lectures. You can store hand writting instead of using character recognition which is often slower than normal writing. My boss has one he loves it, especially as it can act as a normal laptop too. Unfortunatly it has no cd/dvd drive so you will have to bare that in mind.

Check if the lecturer and/or uni lets you. Ours doesnt cause it distracts people from the lecture.
I got to play with a Compaq TC1000 last summer for a few minutes and it was mint. Only problem was the Transmedia cpu which is well crappy.
