    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AMD-P...MHz-85W-Retail

would fit into this amd motherboard, not familar with amd stuff

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-...-SATA-RAID-ATX

It will work. Like you said; you are putting a pretty good processor in a board that is not going to get the best out of it.

It'll work, just not as well as you might like, but I don't think thats a very highly recommended board. I wouldn't buy it unless you already have it.

If the OP wants to do any overclocking I would go for this motherboard:

Don't go for the earlier revision 1 of the Gigabyte MA770-UD3.

    Re: AMD info

The chip in question is a black edition so surely overclocking is a minorissue being an unlocked multi..

    Re: AMD info

I meant to say that the Gigabyte 770 was better for a big overclock as it has more options in the BIOS and has functioning ACC too.

Also to the OP what is the PC being used for BTW?? An Athlon II may do the job too!!

    For instance:

    Athlon II X2 240 ~£43

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=1050342

    Asus M3N78-VM ~ £49

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-...-RAID-uATX-VGA

    OR

    Sapphire PE-AM2RS740G PURE Element ~ £31

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Sapph...-RAID-mATX-VGA

Has the SB700 southbridge so the HyperTransport should run at full speed.

    2gb DDR2 ~ £26

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/2GB-(...d-CAS-4-4-4-12

    Samsung 320gb F1 ~£34

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/320-G...MB-Cache-89-ms

    Coolermaster Elite 340 with 460w PSU ~ £50

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Coole...60W-PSU-Fitted

    DVD rewriter ~ £17

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Index.aspx?NT=1-0-7-381.489-0

    120mm fan ~ £4

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/120mm...value-case-fan

The total comes to around £205 with the 740G motherboard or £223 with the 8200 motherboard.

Don't see the point. What is this PC for and is it on a strict budget?

The X3 720 is available from Ebuyer for £92 delivered:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159071

If you are not overclocking the X2 545 is clocked only 100mhz slower than the X2 550 and is £68 delivered:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168972

The Athlon II X2 will be fine for a general purpose PC and even one used for light gaming. Things like word processing and internet don't need a very fast processor. Go for the Phenom II X2 or Phenom II X3 if you are doing heavier gaming and stuff like video encoding.
