    Why no Q8400S chips around?

    Guys

I was waiting for a cheap quad core chip with 65W consumption, but see that the 8400S chip is somewhat rare.. ie... does it exist?

It was apparently launched back in April... and Scan have them on pre order only.

Anyone know whats happening, or are there other 65w chips around at sensible money?

    David

If you are looking for a 65w quad core the Phenom II X4 905e is clocked at 2.5ghz and costs around £128:

    Here are some reviews:

Get an AM3 770(if you have a graphics card) or 785G(if you need integrated graphics) based motherboard and 4gb of DDR3 RAM and the whole lot will cost under £250.

    Thanks for the detailed reply!

I had not really considered AMD to be honest, as in the past they have never been "cool n quiet"!

That looks an excellent price for the chip... I just have to weigh up the cost of 8gb ram and a motherboard.... I have an intel board and ddr2 memory sitting "spare".

I need the box to run VMs only (hyper-v) ..no games, so power is important for a 24/7 server... although I am not convinces how much difference it will result in at the end of the day!

    Oh, what to do!

The AM3 CPUs have a DDR2 memory controller so will work in a DDR2 motherboard too.I would look at this 780G one:

Also you can get the triple core X3 705e for around £93:

It is supposed to have the same TDP as the X4 905e.

Re: Why no Q8400S chips around?

If you got the triple core X3 705e and a motherboard with SB710 / SB750 motherboard (i.e. a 785G / 790GX or *some* 770 chipsets) you would have a *chance* to unlock the 4th core as well, so you might end up with a working quad core for < £100! Alternatively, you could wait a few months as AMD are meant to be bringing out a range of Athlon II multi-core processors, some of which would probably be restricted to lower TDPs (e.g. 45W - 65W) - Opterons already exist in this power frame...
