Temperature Issues

My Intel Core i7 920 seems to be running much too hot, even at stock, which is the worrying problem. I am using an Akasa Nero 967, with Arctic Cooling MX-2. At stock, it is booting at around 70 degrees celcius, sometimes as low as 42 though. However, when overclocked to 3.2Ghz, temperature jumps up to 84 degrees celcius. I have reseated the heatsink a number of times, but can't seem to fix the problem. Help me!

Make sure that there is decent airflow in the case and also run the CPU cooler fan at maximum speed too. You may need to muck around the placement of the fans to get the best temperatures too. From I read the Akasa Nero should be capable of cooling an i7 at stock quite easily - is the heatsink surface flat too or are any of the heatpipes damaged??

Have you double-checked it is installed correctly and how are you applying thermal paste/how much do you use? Also how fast is the fan running?

All push pins are in correctly, fan is running at 1600RPM, which is full speed. I am applying a vertical line of paste onto the CPU itself, and strips of paste onto the metal parts separating the heatpipes on the heatsink, as recommended on a guide. This is really baffling me, any help given is greatly appreciated.

Check that you are not overvolting the CPU in anyway! Also make sure that the airflow to the CPU cooler is not being disturbed in the case by the PSU or graphics card.

I doubt it would make that much difference but you might be using a bit too much paste. I generally use a rice-grain sized line of MX2 but I've never installed a HDT heatsink myself so I wouldn't know where to start. It is now reaching 84 degrees celcius at stock voltages and frequencies, even after reseating the heatsink again. I'm beginning to feel like there is a bigger problem behind this now.

Do you have another heatsink you could try? It could also be a faulty temp sensor.
