    RAID Config

I have motherboard with a raid controller and 4 SATA ports. Is it possible to set up RAID as follows:

HD0 - OS's (will not be backed up as just create images of OS)
    HD1 - Storage (RAID 1)
    HD2 - Copy of HD1 (RAID 1)

Please let me know if this is not enough information.

    Cheers.

    Re: RAID Config

Do you mean HD1 and HD2 will be the raid 1 pair?

    Re: RAID Config

    Possibly.
It will depend on the RAID controller. Some only support one RAID type at a time e.g. RAID1 or RAID.
You are asking if it will support 1 drive in JBOD (Just another bunch of drives) mode AND 2 drives in RAID1. Only a look at the manual or examination of the RAID controller BIOS will tell you that sadly.

Why in gods name would he put his primary OS drive into a JBOD when he has nothing to pair it to? The motherboard will directly control it as normal!

To the OP, check your manual to see what RAID versions your chip supports. If you are having trouble just post your motherboard (or alternatively fill out "My System") here and we can find out for you.

    Re: RAID Config

I was intending getting an Asus M4A785TD-V EVO which supports SATA II RAID 0, 1 and 5 on its SB750 Southbridge.

    Cheers.

Depends on the RAID controller as I originally said.
If you have three drives running off one on-board RAID chipset it is quite possible it will not support both a RAID array and singular drives simultaniously. You may have to put the lone disc into a JBOD setup and as it's a simgle disc it'll just operate as normal.

Sorry if I confused anyone. No need to go over the top though khaos.

Sadly I've no experience of the motherboard in question or its southbridge so I can't give an exact answer - merely it should be checked before buying.

I didn't know some RAID chips were that fussy!

I apologise for my apparent over reaction, a compination of lots of people not helping me with computer stuff in my earlier "career" means I sometimes have trouble taking things at face value. Particularly when I am under some form of stress, such as my exam tomorrow. I apologise to anyone I offended.

OP nativating the BIOS and setting up a RAID is usually pretty easy. Just make sure the drive is backed up, or if you're paranoid, take it out until you have set up the RAID. And don't be afarid to ask for help. We may sometimes bite, like me above, but we always mean well.
