Old XP2500+ needs new board
Hi
I have an old PC consisting of a homebrewed AMD 2500XP+ CPU, tower case, fans, power unit and 1.5gigs of RAM (PC2700 DDR Ram).
Considering turning it into a NAS or fileserver.
Anyway wanting to upgrade the motherboard ( ASUS A7V33) to take SATA HD's (current mobo is IDE only) any suggestions for a low price option...?
Want to keep CPU as opposed to building completely from scratch
Any thoughts would be great!
Re: Old XP2500+ needs new board
I used to use an MSI KT6 based motherboard before I changed my XP2800 over to an nForce2 based Shuttle barebones.
I would look at either chipsets as they were both quite stable IMHO. In fact my nForce2 based Shuttle is still working as a server using Ubuntu server Edition.
IIRC the KT6 motherboard was an MSI KT6 Delta-FIS2R and it had SATA as does the nForce2 motherboard in the Shuttle.

You could always buy a PCI SATA card.
The other thing to consider is the number sata ports you need as most of the Socket A boards that I've seen only have 2 sata ports.
Re: Old XP2500+ needs new board
Also you'll want a seperate controller card if you're thinking about raid as I don't think any of the socketA motherboards had raid.

Yes that occurred to me as well after I had posted here. Seems to me as though buying a new board would just complicate matters. I have my eye on a SATA 300 4 Port PCI
One thing I am looking at is running the 2500 at stock speeds and reviewing the options for cooling. At the moment the cpu is being cooled by a Zalman 'flower' and fan (here)
Socket A cooling is rather scarce now...anyone have any idea on improving the cooling...i.e. getting it as close to silent as possible?
The case has openings for 4 80mm (grrr!) fans (2 exhaust (upper rear) and 2 input (low front)) and I am looking to use possibly only 2 fans to also reduce the noise.
As I am looking at NAS (OpenFiler etc) will reducing the RAM to from 1.5GB to 1GB be enough?

I think that the ASUS has RAID 1/0 though it's through the IDE connections
