A while back it seemed you could get motherboards with integrated wireless chips, avoiding the need for horrible dongles or using up a PCI-slot.. but I can't seem to find any these days - have they gone out of fashion for some reason?

In full (u)ATX boards, yes. In Mini/Pico ATX, no.. they're still quite popular.
