Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?
hello,
I've seen accounts on the 'net of people being able to "force" a 21x multiplier on the i7 920, using their Rampage GENE/P6T motherboards.
I understand that it is possible to use Intel's Turbo Boost to 'temporarily', under load, to increase the multiplier to 21 on 1 or 2 cores, but this is the first time I've heard of being able to have a 'permanent' x21 multiplier on all 4 cores without using Turbo Boost.
What other boards can do this?
Also, will it be possible to reach a x22 multiplier using Turbo Boost?

No, 21x is the highest I'm afraid. :)
No idea how to force it other than by using turbo boost and putting the CPU under load, sorry.....
Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?
you manually set the multi to 21, its as simple as that on my rampageII mobo.
Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?
Gonzo, you have a 940 though, so that's irrelevant for 920 (unless you have experience of that chip)
Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?
its the same chip apart from the 940 having a multi of 22 and 23 on turbo.
so its very relevant as the overclocking tips apply just the same as a 920 and all the I7 chips that are out at the moment, even the EE versions.
and the gene boards a scaled down R2E, i think you can still set the multi to the max thanks to BIOS revisions.
Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?
So you can set your multi to 23?
I can't set it to 21 on my P6T Deluxe but my BIOS is a couple of revisions old, will look into this. :)
Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?
yeh i can, i think you have to set the BIOS to manual overclocking and disable turbo mode then it should allow a manual multi of 21, you may be as well digging round the asus forum for your mobo ?

Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?
I currently use a 21 multi on my P6T SE and 920 D0, 170 x 21 for 3.6GHz
Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?
Yeah gonzo, but we always knew taht the 940 went to 21 multi, the question is does the 920...

i thought i had explained it with enough information for you to understand, but maybe not :)
you use the 920 overvclocking guide for a 940 but using common sence you know that you can add another 2 onto the multi hence me running a 23 multi.
understand yet ?
i did edit out what may be deemed as sarcastic in my original reply to you saying that my system spec has nothing to do with this as i was answering the OP's question as i knew the answer. so lets leave it at that ok ?
Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?
Hey, I'm not being agressive...
Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?
maybe not but you were barking up the wrong tree
Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?
nvm, but I assume you have specific experience with the 920 then?
Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?
It doesn't really matter tbh, if you can force a 23x multi on a 940 you'll be able to force 21x on a 920. :) I'll give it a go later though and report back, just to clear it up..... DDY says it works though, so it must. :)
