Sharkoon Silent Eagle

Hi all,

Thinking of replacing my Yate Loons with the above fan in 120mm,

Will need 4 in Total:

2 for HDD Cages
1 Exhaust fan
1 CPU Fan

My question is, should I buy the 2000RPM and let the BIOS drop them down to a lower speed or should I get the 1000RPM?

Anyone use these?

i had about 6 sharkoon and 5 got very noisy within 12 months, the bearings are pants. they do not do what they say on the tin.

I was going based on the CUSTOM PC review, Noctua's seemed to not even be ranked.

Any advice?

Sharkoon have always been great for me FYI.


I like the Nexus 120mm fans myself.
KustomPC have them.

Noctua and Scythe have both high pressure and low pressure fans so make sure you choose the correct ones. For the CPU and hard drive cages I would choose high pressure fans as the airflow is impeded unlike the exhaust fan.

Its not about speed. The high pressure fans will still generate enough airflow even if some of the airflow is pushed backwards by an obstacle whereas low pressure fan start to loose significant airflow if it is impeded.

If it was your machine what would you put?

Baring in mind you want pretty much TOTAL silence as a priority

Also you could check out the Scythe alternatives too but I have had no experience with them.

You should also use a fan control or the supplied resistive cables to control the fan speeds.

I cannot speak about the Nocturn's as I've never used one.
What Cat says about high vs low pressure fans is correct, but had to know what fan is which type.
On other thing I'll mention is vortex cone, the air pushed out by a fan is in the shape of a cone, some fan have wider cones some have narrower cones, seems to be down to the blade shape.
I mention this as it can be deceptive as to how much air a fan is pushing out, esp just by touch/feel.
Fans with wide air cones seem to push out far less air than thoes with tight cones but can infact be pushing out just as much.

I will now say that the Scythe S-FLEX fans are still probably the best I've used.
the 900rpm is very very quiet, you near your ear next to them to hear them, although the air flow is low.
The 1600rpm version is low noise, far from slient, but does move a good amount of air.
The 1200rpm is probably the best middle ground fan, low noise but still decent air flow.
The S-FLEX series are expensive, but the most solidly made fan I've ever used and unlike some fans seem to suffer no motor noise when undervolted.

However with all that said, which Yate Loon fans have you got?
Simply replaceing them with a different model or reduceing there speed with a fan controller my be all you need to do.

Silent means the only way you can hear it is if you put your ear on the cold black, aluminum. And even from 20cm away the PC Sounds off.

Heat isn't really an issue in the case, most HDs are green power, CPU is throttled back on ASUS Ai Power and the Heatsink is an ultra 120.

The Yate Loons are the D12 SL I believe, They are all connected to the motherboard, but the problem is the motherboard only has 2 fan connectors, 1 cpu fan connector, and one power fan connector.

The Power Fan connector isn't controlled in the bios so runs at 1300 RPM
The 2 case fans run at around 1100 RPM
The CPU fan also runs at 1300 RPM

Noctuas seem expensive compared to the Silent Eagles, and the review didn't favour them that much, I don't know :S

If they are the D12SL then they are sleeve baring, 1350rpm.
If you're running the fans off molex to 3pin adaptors you can try swapping the pins over (if possible) for a simple 5v mod that should knock them down to 700-800rpm.

No idea what the Scythe Gentle Typhoon are like, but they do look pretty

If you want a 120mm PWM fan for your cpu cooler I can recomend the Akasa Apache, thwy are good quality and the one I have is doing a great job on my e6600 + ultra90
I'd not use them for a silent case without PWM headers on the motherboard though because at a stright 12v they are not silent.

You want to look for 120mm fans 1000rpm or less for silent.

Scythe Gentle Typhoon is a low pressure fan AFAIK. BTW Custom PC reviews are crap IMHO and the they probably have not even reviewed the newer Noctua low pressure fans which are meant to be excellent. TAKTAK has experience with the FLX series BTW. Here are some reviews of the FLX series:

I always get high powered fans that accept multiple Voltages. Therefore while e.g. surfing for porn, they can be silenced.
