    Re: Storing 3.5" HDDs

The best method? A Peli case with ESD foam and pre-cut holes for 3.5" HDDs.
    http://www.casesbypelican.com/hdrives.htm
My google-fu to find UK suppliers has failed me.

The second best method? A Peli case with "Pick 'n' pluck" foam where you can cut your own holes, and use the plastic "SeaShell" things for ESD protection.

The third best method? SeaShells in any old foam box.

The fourth best method? Just put the HDDs on a shelf somewhere on their own.

Personally, I use a Peli case (model 1450, I think) and can fit 3 SeaShell HDDs in it along with some spare silica gel dessicant packs, stored somewhere safe from fire and burglars.

    Re: Storing 3.5" HDDs

I actually have a peli case with pluck foam that I cut to take 10x 3.5" drives in anti-static bags.

    Forgot about that.

Wow. Not cheap (actually, the same as some HD), but pretty ideal for backup.

    Re: Storing 3.5" HDDs

An alternative to the Peli case is a simple (ish) aluminium "flight case" with roughly the same type of foam innards as the Peli cases.

Cheaper (about £30 from Maplin IIRC) and good enough - unless, of course, you intend storing them on a bombing range or under about 300 yards of water.

    Re: Storing 3.5" HDDs

I don't suppose they offer 'free delivery' above £x.xx do they?

I might get that Mapplin case once I have a couple of backup drives.

Yes, I could make one (god knows I've recycled enough cardbord over the past couple of months) but It wouldn't be as nice and neat as that.
Yeah but you don't need to be a mechanical engineer or a carpenter to fold a bit of cardboard and hold it together with some sticky back plastic. Let's be realistic here

No you need the engineer to design a single net that doesn't require stick back plastic
I have every respect for some of the cardboard packing I've received over the years. It truely is an artform.

    Re: Storing 3.5" HDDs

I store all mine in the plastic cases and then inside the quantity boxes they come in with the foam cutouts. If you don't have one of those you can buy them from RMA packagign suppliers that some manufacturers list or try to ask a PC store perhaps.
