see my signature :)
Team 69776 & currently #139 in the world (thanks in no small part to Joshwa, Lowe & delibes 'aka' Peter Parker amongst others still producing). Some of the other big hitters have had to drop out for various reasons & we need all the help we can get. It can be for some a big kick in the 'leccy bill and we understand completely :)
But for those that can afford it/don't care/don't pay the bill/fold @ work etc & can stand the heat... welcome!
Hexus Team stats @ EOC
Il change my team number then !!! :)
Rank 206 on the list w00t after only 1 work unit as well :D Is there away i can run on both my 260 and Q6600 ??
In my experience, trying to run the CPU client is a waste of time. The points it generates is pitiful compared to the GPU client and that's if you can get it to run on all 4 cores in the first place!
I used to GPU fold for Hexus but the weather's been far too hot this summer and there are times when it feels like water could boil on my desk. Thus, I've caused for a bit and will most likely restart in the coming, colder months :)
What in the love and honour of God is Folding? I see it everywhere! I feel like I am missing out in something big, but don't know any different...... (I guess thats part of being Irish :stupid:)
Protein folding, innit.
In nature, proteins (basically very long molecules) form a certain 3-dimensional shape naturally, and this 3D shape is - in simplistic terms - the lowest energy state the structure can exist in. The shape of a protein relates to its function, and thus it's interesting to science to be able to make proteins that have a certain particular shape, and therefore a particular function. Unfortunately, the calculations that determine how a protein folds are extremely complicated, and take a long time, and so finding a protein that has a very specific shape is extremely time consuming. People donate their spare compute time for free, because finding specific-shaped proteins has many many (mainly medical?) applications.
