    CPU Cooler Question

I want to get a new CPU cooler because I realized that all my cores IDLE at 69C
and it's very confusing because there are fans and heatsinks of all different dimensions. What exactly matters? Just the compatibility with my processor and the room in my case? Or is there more to it?

    Thnx alot

Yes, also how much you want to spend.

Looks almost the same as a standard Intel cooler. I doubt it will perform any better than a standard Intel unit either.

    Re: CPU Cooler Question

What processor do you have? It depends on what socket it uses eg LGA775, AM2, AM3, LGA1366, etc.

    Re: CPU Cooler Question

Assuming it will fit your CPU, the Akasa is available on Scan http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Akasa...-120mm-PWM-fan and it has a good review at Frostytech http://www.frostytech.com/articlevie...id=2354&page=1 but beware it's Heatpipe Direct Touch so be careful how you apply thermal paste. You could follow this http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.ph...1&limitstart=5 or apply and spread grease on the CPU first. Firstly though what CPU do you have so we can check it will fit for you?

    Re: CPU Cooler Question

Let start off with getting some correct and usefull information.

There is NO point in sugesting what to buy when we have no idea if it will fit.

We need to know the following.
    Motherboard socket type
    CPU
    Motherboard clearence
    Case type / clearence

As you've mentioned HP, I guessing that you've got some prebuilt HP computer?
If so and you have no idea as to what's actually inside it to answer the above questions, then then telling us the model will help.

Also to start off with, have you cleaned out any dust from your current cpu cooler?

    Re: CPU Cooler Question

    Ok this is my computer
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...roduct=3629325
Processor is Core 2 Quad Q6600,Socket is 775.Case is 16"x6.5"x14"(LxWxH)
I checked this page to see the socket number not to find a CPU cooler.(Blaineoliver)
I have less than 5 cubic inches of space in my case for the cooler(a little over 100mm max)
    Mobo info is here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...roduct=3629325

Thanx, and to answer Pob255, There is dust, but does it make that much of a difference?

    Re: CPU Cooler Question

If there is enough dust on the CPU cooler it can have a big impact on cooling performance. You could try cleaning it off to see if cooling improves any. You can use a vacuum cleaner but be careful where you put the nozzle and make sure the suction doesn't make fans spin as spinning too fast could damage them.

Edit: also check the fan is working properly and listen for any grinding sounds which could mean a damaged fan.

    Re: CPU Cooler Question

It seems strange that its running that high at stock. Surely reapplying with new thermal paste and getting rid of dust should help some way.
