    Interesting facts about Intel E6500K

The retail samples clock worse than the ones sent out for review:

    standard practice i reckon...

I could have been unlucky (i usually am) as I have had an E4300 that only went to 3ghz, an E5200 that only went to 3.4ghz and an E7200 that *just* gets to 3.5ghz.

All with 3rd party coolers and lots of extra voltage.

However, I did have an E2140 that hit 3.2ghz

Does it even affect most readers/ buyers anyway? Says mainly for China in the article - but the unlocked mulitplier is interesting.

My E4300 topped out at 3.16ghz and my E4500 topped out around 3ghz too. Even my Q6600 can get to only around 2.9ghz on stock voltages and is one of the later higher VID ones.

This is why I always base my CPU recommendations on stock speeds as there is just too much variability with overclocking. Some batches will be much better than others for example. I would never buy any CPU in the current market over £60 just for overclocked performance alone as I would expect the CPU to have good enough performance at stock speeds if the chip does not overclock very well.

Is a perfectly valid statement, but the potential to blast a Q9550 up to the same sppeds as a Phenom II 965 and even more makes the Phenoms still appear to me as poor value.

You would get the X4 955BE though which is £20 cheaper than a Q9550 though!! The X4 965 is just an overclocked X4 955 and is pointless TBH.

At stock speeds the Q9550 is poor value as it costs £20 more and the Phenom II X4 955BE will be fast enough for most people for quite a while.

Only when the Core i5 arrives will both be blasted into orbit if the £120 price for Core i5 750 is true.

Anyway, unless you are going for a pair of HD4870X2 cards or something like that most games are NOT CPU limited at the moment.

Also,it is not a given that you will even get a Q9550 or X4 955BE that will overclock well. Have you tried every batch?? I haven't, so I cannot guarantee any particular processor batch will hit a particular maximum mhz.

Look at the Q6600 for example. It was everyone's favourite until all of a sudden the later batches did not clock as well. Of course the people who recommended the Q6600 based only on overclocking headroom basically said "that's unfortunate" in multiple forums around the world. Luckily I bought my Q6600 for its stock performance as I got it quite cheap(under £80).

If you have a good clocking Q9550 then it will last you even longer!!

Remember you are ahead of the curve when it comes to most gamers as many are still on dual cores under 3.2ghz.

Im stuck on a cpu lower than 3.2 , e8400! Expensive but was wrth it at the time(oh how technology changes! Amd would of got my money a year ago), overclocks to 3.6ghz stable just under stock volts so all good for when i need that power but for now i run it at 1.11v on stock for power reduction xD.

Re: Interesting facts about Intel E6500K

This is just the nature of overclocking. Intel could have changed the silicon, design, or one of many other things that alter its overclocking potential since the ES chip.

There isn't anything shady about it IMO. If it works well at stock, then it's not being miss sold.
How many times have Intel released consistent chips that overclock to insane levels? I've lost count....

Unless there is some specific evidence to suggest that Intel is being dodgy, I'm putting this down to the nature of overclocking.

The only overclocking which is a given are the Intel Turbo Boost clockspeeds on their Core i5 and Core i7 processors.

Seems like the first officially sanctioned and guaranteed overclock!! However whether the Turbo Boost frequencies are guaranteed for all four cores simultaneously is another thing(hopefully it is)! I told you the Core i5 looks great as it has higher Turbo Boost than the Core i7. It will only take Intel fudging the price on the motherboards to rescue defeat from the jaws of victory!!

Some of us still rock single cores, thanks! I've yet to see a game that has dual-core in its *required* specs.

Then again, I rarely buy PC games outside of the "3 for £10" deals, so what would I know...
