Faulty Speakers?

I recently purchased the following speakers:

However, I immediately noticed that the right speaker is louder than the left one.

I've had this problem with two previous speaker sets (2.0), but the problems got gradually worse (OK at first) rather than being immediately apparent. I therefore suspected the sound card is faulty, so I plugged the speakers into the onboard audio instead. This hasn't changed anything at all, the left speaker is still quieter.

Is there any software that I can use to produce tones to test the loudness of each speaker, rather than relying on games, music etc...?

Could my sound card have damaged the speakers at all?

It seems unlikely that you would get 3 sets of faulty speakers EACH with the same fault. I think soundcard damaging them seems a possibility. Try with seom friends speakers with the onboard maybe.

As nibbler points out, it would seem very unlikely that 3 different sets of speakers would all develop the same fault.

The first thing i would do is remove the sound card if your using something other than the onboard sound and try the onboard sound.

Failing that, could it be perhaps your hearing? I know it sounds a bit extreme but you never know :P

I'll try removing the sound card now.

As for my hearing, I'm only 18 years old. :P I did swap the speakers over to make sure anyway.

Can't you plug them into a MP3 player and give them a shot? :)

I could try an ipod. Would that work?

Assuming they just use a 3.5mm jack, then yes, although the iPod probably wouldn't sound too loud if the speakers don't have an amp (not checked your link).

I've done everything, no difference whatsoever, even with the ipod. I've even uninstalled every creative related app/driver from my system, restarted, shut down, and physically removed the card. This has made no difference either.

Is it safe to say the speakers are faulty?

What I don't understand however, is how on earth the soundcard could possibly have damaged them. And how could it happen so quickly (to one speaker)?
