Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
Hi. i was looking to get this fan SWiF-801 80mm Case Fan but it has been discontinued and i was wondering what other similar fans their are that i can buy for a silvestone LC17 case im looking to order soon.
i will stick in my old pentium 4 which also needs a new cooler as the stock one is far too loud and full of dust :rotfl:
Any thoughts on both matters?
i have one of these as well Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online - Scan.co.uk) can that be installed in the 3.5 drive bay on a silvestone LC17 case?
I could use that to set the fans low while watching a movie and crank it up if i game on it.
i know i should really just build a new htpc but money is tight at the moment and this will do for now:smashin:
cheers

A great 80mm fan, desprite its low price, is a Panaflo from Scan - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/80mm-...Brushless-2Pin and it's very quiet if you run it at 7v. If you want to spend a bit more, Scythe Kama Flex fans are very good and are available at QuietPC.com but they are out of stock now. In the search bar type 'SA08' (the first bit of the model numbers) to see them - the 2000rpm version has great reviews so I assume the other two would be good also - the 2500rpm should move more air but be noisier, the 1500rpm should move less air but be quieter. Something like a Zalman RC56 would be useful for reducing noise (by undervolting) - http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/pro...ries/resistors.

Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
The AKASA AK-FC-03 fits in a 5.23" bay not a 3.5" bay
you want the AKASA AK-FC-06-BK for a 3.5" bay or the sliverstone FP33b
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AKASA...2-USB-20-ports
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Silve...troller-2-3Pin
Both also available in silver
Is the P4 socket 775 or 478?
The Scythe Shuriken is probably your best bet for a low height cooler and will fit ether 478 or 775

Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
+1 for the Kama Flex i use one in my case (2000rpm) great flow and realtivly low noise.
-
Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
cool thanks for the suggestions and yea its a 478.

Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
what do you guys think of this cpu cooler http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Scyth...54-939-940-AM2
is it quiet and cool in temps?

It's fine, if you were using a c2d you could probably get away with it being fanless esp with good case air flow
But the old p4's run hot so I think fanless is out
However the 100mm fan on the Shuriken is going to be much quieter.
and it's a far lower profile

Depends on what the max height of the case is.
Looking at the silverstone website the case height is 170 mm, so that's 120mm fan based tower coolers out
a 92mm fan based tower cooler should fit.
If you can find one the normal Scythe Ninja "should" fit (150mm) although not with a 120mm fan on it, you'd have to drop down to a 92mm fan.

Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
yea the p4 do run hot indeed but the stock cooler is blooming loud and annoying.
i have ordered the case along with 3 of those cheap fans recommended here plus the ultra quiet golf ball fans too and that Scythe Ninj as well.
i will upgrade the core parts to a E5300/ ATI 4870 in the fture but for now this will do nicely :)

Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
The Shuriken is a very good/quiet cooler but it doesn't have the best thermal performance and could struggle with a hot P4.

yea i heard its no better than the stock cooler. Good suggestions though cheers all. I relied on my ps3 for my HTPC needs but after seeing my mates HTPC a few weeks ago, there is no match for it againts a ps3!
sick and tired of transcoding files just to make them play fine on a ps3 :(
-
Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
The PS3 isn't exactly power efficient either.
-
Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
really? its very quiet and doesn't require alot of wattage to run
-
Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
From what I hear (I don't own one) it uses in the area of 300 watts. A purpose-made HTPC could use less than 40 watts which is less than a seventh of the PS3's usage.

Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
I think the newer ones use far less power but still more than most HTPCs. Apparently the slim uses around 100w while the older consoles use more like 200w - a bit less than the 300w I read earlier!

Dont go with the Shuriken its a pile of crap, having owned a mini ninja i couldn't recommend them enough, one of the best small-ish coolers you can buy.

Well I'm working off the fact that I stuck a Scythe Samurai Z on my other half's P4HT 3.0ghz socket478 because the stock cooler was drivering me nuts, esp as our pc's are in the same room and I'd just spent a load on getting my pc quiet
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Scythe-Samurai...QQcmdZViewItem
it is the loudest thing in her pc after I used some scythe S-FLEX fans for case cooling and replaced the TT psu's fan with an S-Flex as well.
Because the Shruiken is so low you could probably replace the fan with a better standard sized 120mm with out impacting the clearence, which should greatly improve it's performance.

I'd have to argue there - its one of the quietest coolers around and cools lower TDP CPUs just fine and it's also one of the best low-profile coolers for slim cases.

Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
jesus christ my old pentium 4 cpu is stuck on the blooming stock cooler!!! Its as if its glued into the bloody thing! Deal breaker! looks like i may need to buy a new mobo and cpu now!!
-
Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
Turn the computer on for a few minutes and let it heat the heatsink up - it may be a wax type TIM used in which case it will be easier to remove melted.
-
Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
ahh ok i will try that. i took off my cpu cooler and along came the cpu as well LMAO. i was wondering why it was a bit hard to take out. now i know.
difficult to put it back on the socket though as i have to lock the "lever" on the socket cpu mechanism on the mobo and then push the whole heat sink down in hopes it connects to all the pins properly
-
Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
As watercooled said, turn it on for abit, f its the stock cooler make sure all the pins are out and give it abit of a twist.
-
Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
manage to take off the cpu from the cooler but now my new heatsink wont fit lol because of this http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/r.../socket_sm.jpghttp://www.extremeoverclocking.com/reviews/motherboards/images/ABIT_IC7_MAX3/socket_sm.jpg

Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
Northbridge cooler? or the plastic MOFET duct?
Oh and he maight of had the pink chewing gum thermal compound, you still find it but mainly on chipset heatsinks and laptop cpu coolers.
That stuff is truely EVIL, as far as I can tell it's some form of polymer, it has the consistancy of used chewing gum that's been stuck to the bottom of a desk for a month.
It does re-soften with heat but it cools and rehardens very quickly.
It's also a total :censored: to clean all traces off a chip as it seems to be non-soluble in alcohols, I had to resort to scrapeing a p4 clean with a scalpel.
-
Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
update: i took off the plastic MOFET duct and my new cpu cooler managed to slot it fine. all is well now and up and running on my new htpc case. dead silent as well so i am impressed.
The cpu cooler is pretty big. i couldnt fit another fan at the side of the case because of it. Its temporarily anyway as i am planning on moving into a core 2 setup soon

Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
Well if you do replace it with a c2d or an athlonII you'll be able to keep using that Shuriken ;)
-
Re: Htpc 80mm fans and pentium 4 cpu cooler?
Sorry the link to the image wasn't there when I posted so I wasn't sure what you meant. Glad you got it sorted though! :)
