Question Recommended mobo for AMD Phenom II X4 955 BlackEdition

    Hi.

Looks like the AMD Phenom II X4 955 BlackEdition is the cpu I'll be purchasing for a new upcoming build in a Lian Li PC80B Armoursuite case, what mobo would you recommend? Is there a compatible 8-port SATA board avail?

Also some good value DDR3 RAM, possibly 4GB as I plan on installing Windows 7 Home once mines delivered?

    Thanks.

    Cheekster.

Have a look at this 770 chipset based motherboard:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/GIGAB...770T-UD3P-MOBO

Alternatively this DFI motherboard has the highest end AMD chipset(790FX) currently available for under £100:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/DFI-L...-SATA-RAID-ATX

It has three PCI-E 2.0 16x slots. It was on Today Only for just under £90 earlier this week!

The processor is on the Shop Offers web-page for around £140:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/ShopOffers/Index.aspx

It is also on offer with the Crossfire capable 790X based(two PCI-E 2.0 8x slots) Asus M4A79XTD EVO for around £212:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx

IMHO,this combination would be ideal for the price as it gives you the chance to try out Crossfire sometime in the near future!!

    Basically the 790FX>790X>770.

Regarding the RAM get some 1600mhz DDR3 and run it at 1333mhz and lower latencies as the current AMD DDR3 memory controllers prefer lower latencies:

I was planning to ask this exact same question in a few weeks... Is this motherboard not advisable? It's quite expensive but looks pretty feature packed...

I'm holding fire until I've sorted out someback up issues, and perhaps the price of the 955 will drop when i5 comes in.

But the MSI GD70 can do full 4 card Crossfire X... and it has LEDs on it! Who doesn't like things with lights on??

Scrap this and get an i5/i7 especially with those MSI boards on the most epic of offers !!!
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Regarding the first and third choices the 790FX is superior to the 790X. The 790FX can run three graphics cards at PCI-E 2.0 16x slots whereas the 790X has to make do with running both cards at PCI-E 2.0 8x. Considering that both motherboards are a similar price the DFI 790FX one is superior if you intend to go Crossfire as even with two cards there is twice the PCI-E 2.0 bandwidth available when compared to the 790X.

If you do not intend to go Crossfire stay with the Phenom II X4 955BE and 790X combo and save some money.
