Re: Quick memory question
The cheapest stuff should be fine, theres only synthetic performance gains to be had really between the tighter/looser timed RAM.
Re: Quick memory question
Nope you're looking at timeings there not speed.
Tighter (smaller) timings will give a small performance increase, and slightly more than haveing faster memory.
You may be confused by intel quad pumping the fsb number.
i.e. the e6300 is listed as FSB 1066 MHz but in reality the motherboard fsb is 266mhz
The speed DDR2 run is half it's listed speed, so that pc2-8500 runs at 533mhz
Look for cheaper DDR2 pc2-6400 800mhz
This is still going to be running faster than the cpu (you set the memory speed in the BIOS with the divider) but it's still the best price point for DDR2
Depends what you currently have, if you've already got 2x1gb then another 2x1gb would probably be best
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/2GB-(...d-CAS-4-4-4-12
or 2x2gb for £41

Or better still some Crucial Ballistix
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143844
£42 for CAS4
Re: Quick memory question
Ah - ok. I've not got anything at the moment so it'll be 4Gb from scratch.
The Crucial Ballistix looks good but I did find a thread on here suggesting that Crucial seems to suffer quite a few more failures than others. CAS 4 versus 5 make enough difference for the risk?
Re: Quick memory question
timings really don't make any difference to real world performance with C2Ds tbh. i'd say get a bog standard 800mhz pair if you're not going to be overclocking :)
Re: Quick memory question
Standard 800 on route from Scan :-)
Thanks.
