Far Cry 2 Benchmark

This is a very interesting one, because even down to 1600mhz, you can play on Full settings with a 4850 with playable FPS.

Max settings:

800MHZ

The Results show that overclocking past stock of 2800mhz with 4 cores unlocked does nothing to the FPS of any games currently out, on the HD4850, on more powerful cards, the clock would need to be higher, but as this shows, overclocks of the 3.5Ghz mark, are not needed except for encoding with the 4850, with the 4890 approx 30% faster, you would need a clock of about 840mhz on top to ensure you are not bottlenecking, assuming no other part of the system is the bottleneck.

Any quad core with a high enough clock-speed should be enough IMHO for most games in the next 18 months.

about optimizing your overclock v's your voltage needed and pretty much showed 3.4 gig to be the sweet spot

It's good to see the new AMD chips are so overclockable. Although I read in CustomPC that the older ones, Phenom 1 for example, were really let down by motherboard MFRs and their full potential wasn't unleashed, so to speak. I also remember reading about exploding motherboards - if you used a high-TDP chip the board could fail spectacularly. As CustomPC said I bet AMD are feeling relieved motherboard MFRs are doing a much better job this time around. Thanks for the post Blaineoliver!

Thanks for wPrime result. I thought the 720 was an X3 - have you unlocked a core? Or do you mean the 920?

YEs it's an unlocked core x3 720 black edition, it's pretty fast, overkill for gaming currently, good for encoding etc.
