Im about to buy a PCI Belkin card for my computer, but it is advertised as Pre-N.

If I buy a wireless N router, will the card work at the full N speeds? Im not quite clued up on ''Pre-N''

No, the G or B card will work at G or B data rates, N routers and access points will still support G or B WNICs.

So the fact it is stated as ''Pre-N'' just means it supports everything but N?

    thanks

Re: Pre-N wireless card - urgent

    It's a bit confusing.

The N standard has taken ages to get near completion. Several companies decided that they 'thought' they knew what the final was going to be like, or at the least they could make their hardware fully N by a software upgrade.
These companies made their own equipment using MIMO (Multiple in, Multiple out) technology, but with slight differences. This means that some pre-N equipment doesn't work at N speeds when mixing different manufactures.. If you stick to the ones brought by the same company (card in your PC same as the router, normally as a bundle) you can get much faster speeds than a/b/g

Re: Pre-N wireless card - urgent

i agree with edimax. their products tend to be a bit cheaper but perform just as well.

i bought a 7728in which is a draft N pci card and it works fine. no need to fumble with drivers either, they work with vista 32bit and win 7 64 bit out of the box.

According to the Alliance, users can expect future Wi-Fi products to be fully compatible with today’s products.
Good to hear, but I'm not completely convinced

Re: Pre-N wireless card - urgent

"draft n" can comply with the "full n" standard as far as I understand: the "n" standard has pretty much been finalised for several years now but has just taken years to be released for this reason and that. So in the meantime companies have been releasing "draft n" products years ago that pretty much line up with the "full n" standard.

I've seen enough incompatibilities with G devices to become a bit of a skeptic when it comes to wireless.

Is this a good adapter then? I think we are getting an O2 wireless-n router and I need a decent adapter to go with it...had bad experiences with wireless USB in the past! What the score with this one?

    Thanks guys.

This is also a good adapter:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Edima...B-3dbi-adapter

I think reception would be better due to having a large antenna.
