Quite a few socket1156 motherboard showing up now

    Just looked at Scan
    MSI, Asus, Gigabyte, EVGA, ASRock

A few of the low end models under £100

I do like the look of the new EVGA motherboards, the all black is a very intresting way to go.
with the "Standard" board coming in at £103 the price isn't too bad ether.
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=1068654

Now we just need some more CPU's other than the 750

Hmm... the prices are indeed not bad at all. How good are EVGA boards in general though?

I've only just realised, intel are no longer making reference motherboards.

Did they make one for i7?

They made a DX58SO, not reference though, just a motherboard.

Re: Quite a few socket1156 motherboard showing up now

First time I've seen ether of them

    that's some odd specs there
    Intel Extreme DP55KG Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard
    - CPU: Intel Core i7/Core i5 Processors (Socket LGA1156)
They are going to make socket1156 i7 cpu's??
I wonder what the PWM phase is?
And when are they going to start using just solid caps

    You know what I mean
We always used to see the intel motherboards very early on now they are just sort of sneaking in.

EDIT also spotted something intresting on the Intel Extreme DP55SB
as the p55 can use pci-e x16 or two pci-e x8, instead of putting in two pci-e x16 slots they've put in one pci-e x16 slot and one pci-e x8 slot with an open back end and a seperate rear clip.

    That's actually pritty cunning.

Yeah, just to be confusing there are two 1156 i7 CPU's so far. Flippin intel...

    http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpu...d-cpu-review/1

    Read and be surprised

As far as the PWM phase goes, correct me if I'm wrong, i am sometimes, lol, the more phases the mobo uses the more stable the power, as a general rule. PWM is Pulse Width Modulation, an effective method of changing the mean DC value. e.g. stepping down your 12v to something it wants.

    i7 = hyper-threading.

Re: Quite a few socket1156 motherboard showing up now

    ok so
    Core i5 and LGA1156 Core i7 =
    4 cores
    i7 = HT = 8 virtual cores
    on chip pci-e 2.0, max 1 x16 or 2 x8
on chip dual channel ddr3 controller

    i7 LGA1366 =
4 cores + HT for 8 virtual cores
On chip triple channel ddr3 controller
    northbridge pci-e (x58 chipset)

So the next question is how does a i5 750 & p55 do vs a Q9400 & p45 when both are running at stock 2.66ghz?
considering that the q9400 is currently £5 cheaper, but the high end p45 motherboards are under £150 and ddr2 is still cheaper than ddr3

If you are looking to upgrade a Q9400 will work with your motherboard:

Re: Quite a few socket1156 motherboard showing up now

I've realised that Cat which is why I was wondering how well i5+p55 stacks up against a c2q+p45

Seeing as I managed to get one of thoes cheap MSI boards, I'm considering moving my bits into the otherhalf's pc.

Also considering seeing if I can pick up a 2nd hand 9800gtx and go sli or something . . . I just think I've got the "need to build a new pc" bug atm.

In most situations the i5 750 is better - lots in anything that's sensitive to memory bandwidth, plenty in anything that uses one or two cores only because the i5 gets much faster then.

Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
