    Sound card issues

I've got a Gigabyte GA-P43-ES3G motherboard (P43 chipset in case you couldn't guess ) which I've had for about 8 or 9 months.

Recently the sound has started breaking up periodically. It works fine for a while and then just breaks up. I've tried both speakers and head phones and both experience the problem (And i've used the head phones on my ipod with no issues).

Any idea what the problem might be? I'd rather not be sending the motherboard back to scan just to sort out this minor issue. If it is dying can anyone suggest if I should go for a PCI-X or PCI sound card (Is there any real difference for someone with 10 year old dell speakers!)? Any real benefit in sending out out decent creative card or should I just go with a cheapy generic? I do have a 4 year old soundblaster live I could use but I'm not sure it will be Win7 compatible (Installing in a day or so)?

    Thanks!

Edit: I only need sound for gaming and the odd movie - The dell speakers are 2.1's and sound nice and beefy!

    Re: Sound card issues

With an X-Fi you'll get some additional gaming effects that you wouldn't have with onboard. You'll get some of them with a Xonar.

If you don't want to spend much, and don't mind the odd game that sounds the same as onboard, I'd recommend an Xonar DS. If you want the full effects, maybe step up to an X-Fi Titanium or Xtreme Gamer.

    Re: Sound card issues

Thanks for the suggestion but they cost almost as much as my motherboard - wouldn't really want to spend much more than £20 (scan have a PCI audigy for £22) Not to fussed about EAX etc - I mainly play strategy games so advanced effects not really a big issue.

    Re: Sound card issues

If you're using Vista or W7, just make sure you get a card that comes with Alchemy if you're thinking of going with Creative. You'll need it for Directsound3D support for a number of games.

The Audigy SE at scan should do the job. You might need to get Alchemy as a download but it's free. Bonus is you'll get up to EAX 3 support in games that have it (which does include several stragegy games).

    Re: Sound card issues

Sorry to sound daft, but have you tried updating the drivers, or checking something hasn't installed that may be conflicting with it. If the drivers have auto-updated try rolling them back.

To get the same kinda quality as the realtek you'd have to spend a bit. I'd send it back rather than downgrade.

No I haven't - Haven't really done much with the PC recently except play Medieval 2: Total war - I'll go and check if windows has done any upgrades (using the laptop at the moment).

    Re: Sound card issues

Medieval II is an EAX Advanced HD title, so you would get some additional effects with an Audigy over onboard.

Edit: the Audigy SE gives up to EAX 3 support. It's Audigy 2 or X-Fi Xtreme Audio for EAX 4 support. I've edited my earlier post to clarify.

    Re: Sound card issues

Just checked - Driver hasn't changed since I installed Vista! I might see what happens when I install Win7 in a couple of days. If that doesn't solve it I'll get the audigy I think - looks the cheapest simpliest solution. I'll update in a few days!

    Re: Sound card issues

Anyone know how the Audigy SE is in W7?

There have been a lot of people having trouble with audio on various cards when moving to w7. I'm sure it will all be fine eventually but Asus and Creative have been taking their time sorting drivers out for their cards.

    Things to do/try

remove current drivers, download the latest off gigabytes website and install them.
Check realtech's website for newer drivers for your sound chip ACsomething if they are newer than the ones on gigabytes web site.
Unplug the front audio connector from the motherboard I've not had this issue on newer board but I have come across audio issues when the case front audio is connected on older motherboards
try a different audio socket, depends on which chip it is as to how easy it it to get it to execpt the audio jack in another socket as the left/right channel.

yes i have had a similar problem

Also check to see if front panel is connected as AC97 or HD and then check the bios is set to the same ( if the bios has this setting )

    Re: Sound card issues

Thanks for the front panel suggestion - I'll have a look when I get home tonight. Only ever used the front panel once - and that was to test with head phones! Guess I'll just disconnect it, thinking about it.

I'll also try and different connector on the rear panel (It does support the jack detection).

I'll let you know how it goes.

    Re: Sound card issues

Well - apart from getting a metal splinter it seems to have gone well. Changed jack and disconnected front panel and just played Medevial 2: total war with no break up. It wasn't a two+ hour session (when its more likely to happen) but still looking good.
