What OC heat sink + fan for XP-M Barton 2500+

My mate is going to build a system based on an Abit NF7-S and the above processor. Probably with 1 Gig of Corsair XMS DDR 463MHz PC3700 Cas 3 memory 2x512mb (anything better for the money?), a 37Gig raptor boot drive, 200gGig storage drive (probably WD caviar 8mb jobby), 550w CWT PSU. He wants to OC the system. He has a 9700pro and optical drives are sorted. Any changes worth making to the above bits and the main question, what heat sink?? I suggested a zalman CNPS7000A-Cu, as I have read good things about it.
Lastly any good cases out there that take 120mm fans and dont cost the earth? Would 120's give good cooling with low noise or stick with 80's.

I have a Zalman Flower (CNPS5100-AlCu I think), and it does the job for me.

Doesn't sound like he is short of money so a Thermalright SP97 & a 92mm fan esp as he is overclocking.

Iirc, the CNPS7000A-Cu is incompatible with the NF7-S without a bit of work on the bracket?

this is true, sadly - think some of the thermalright beasts need "custom standoffs" (or plain just don't fit) on the older (rev1.0/1.1/1.2) boards too...which is a bugger, since I have a 1.2.

With a zalman flower you can ditch the northy hsf and fit a zalman passive cooler. The 92mm fan cools the cpu and overlaps the nb also so you get rid of that whining mofo. The flower keeps my 2500m at 38oc at 200 x 12

If you have a rev 2 then get a slk900 or variant (sp97 etc) then get a nice 92mm fan on top and you are well away :D

Does the slk900 fit the Abit NF7-S alright?

by the way some antec cases have a nice 120mm fan running at 7 volts and you get a good powersupply with them... Also their hd mounting system is just great and will be copied by lots of manufacturers i think.

get an SP-97 and a vantec tornado... but make sure you have some controller to slow it down!

I have an Abit NF7-S v1.2, with a Zalman CNPS7000alcu quite happily sitting on it.

It was only a trivial matter of relocating a capacitor on the board to make it fit :)

Basically, I removed the capacitor, soldered a couple of wires between the board & the capacitor, then wedged it between two others. It hasn't affected stability as I can hit 240FSB still with this board.

If you are confident with modding motherboards, this is relatively easy compared to a voltmod.


It's a damn good heatsink too for the money. I've got an Athlon XP-M 2600+ running at 2600Mhz @ 1.9v, and full load temp is 52C. Idle is around 46C with case temp of 24C

Get some good PC3500 ram, the mobos fsb rpolly wont go high enough to take adavantage of pc 3700, plus pc3500 will have better latencys
