    Question Upgrading old intel HP

    Hi folks,

Got a friend who's got a Compaq Presario SG3200UK Desktop PC with an intel e2140. This is a socket 775 stuff. I cant tell you how sloooow this pc is but its painfull. Hes asked me to upgrade it so im changing the memory to 2GB corsair.

The big question is which CPU can i upgrade it to? The spec say that it can take Core 2 Duo E4x00 cpus's. As im not an intel fanboy im at a loss here.

What whould be best for this ? i was thinking on a E2220 (2.4ghz) or something else.

Can anybody give me suggestions pls?

    thanks,

E4300's are selling for £35 inc on Ebay.

Why doesn't your friend put this computer in the local paper and buy himself something new, PC hardware is so cheap atm.

    Re: Upgrading old intel HP

Start off with, find out the motherboard specs (CPUz is great for this) and double check the BIOS

Once you know the chipset you'll have a better idea of what you can put in it.
You may be able to overclock it, but the options are probably very limited.

Also go through windows and make sure that's nice and clean, a load of running in the background will have a major impact on performance.

2x 1gb of memory, don't really need more, corsair value select (1.8v) is probably best as the BIOS probably cannot feed higher voltages needed for high spec memory.
Again no point going over pc2-6800

If it can use e4xxx then it can probably use 65nm e6xxx cpu's as well.

I agree with Yosh on this, 2nd hand is probably you're best bet.
