    *blinks*

You do know how big that CPU cooler is, right? Even if you could fit it in the case I'm not sure the airflow would be sufficient for it to run passively.

im hoping the 3.5" cage bit is removable (i think it is) then i could put a super slow scythe on half of it at least.. but supposedly the front 120mm and psu fan do enough - some people have run it with a quad which i wont be doing but nice to know.

Personally I'd swap the hard drive for another make, I've seen to many hitachi travelstar's fail
Although that is the older pata ones and they may of improved.

If you can afford the extra £11 the 320gb WD Scorpio black

I agree with Pob255, get a WD black drive, I have not bought another IBM/Hitachi drive since the DeathStar problems, I had 4 out of 4 drives I owned failed, both glass and metal patters. The Specs are nice on the Hitachi drives, however never again, definitively not in a non mirrored pair.

mm maybe, i was more getting the hitachi5400 to be quiet rather than money saving,

iv got a seagate 250gb 7200.4 single platter in my netbook and i would like something a bit quieter for this project, is the wd black better?

    WD stuff is good, but...

Deathstar was quite a while ago now! They made a mistake, they found the mistake and fixed it (yes, I lost a Deathstar too).

I stopped buying IBM/Hitachi because after Deathstar their drives made a stupid noise like there was a cat trapped inside the drive. Their drives were rock solid, just annoying.

Just trying to add some balance

edit to add: For quiet, get a Samsung.

if you want quiet the green and blue western digitals are the way to go they are quieter than the blacks and cheaper. I use blue in my pc and am happy with the noise i cant hear it over my fans

this will be a 2.5" in a comp that needs to be pretty much silent though

shame scans hdd selection and stock is a bit poo, might get one from ebuyer and pick up another 7200.12 for my raid0 in main comp at the same time

Ahh I was looking at performance not slience
And a draw at work with about seven 2.5" faulty travelstar drives in it. (I really should get around to scrapping thoes)
All of them are old PATA drives so it may of majorly changed just never trusted them enough to buy more hitachi.

I'm using a couple of WD blacks in a file server and apart from a very faint ticking as the heads move, they are pretty quiet. Cetainly no vibration or roptational noise.

It was a toss up between the 500Gb blue and the 320Gb Black - I went for the black on performance grounds, although I suspect I probably wouldn't have noticed much difference in daily use.
